There were 64 Hernons in Kings County (now Offaly) in 1901. I’m sure my ancestors were among them since my grandfather John was born there in 1881.

James and Mary Hernon were Catholics and had 7 children at that time: John J 20, Mary B 18, Annie 16, Bridget 12, William C 10,  Margaret 8, Elizabeth 6.

I can only assume these are my ancestors since the name and date match my grandfather.

In his military discharge papers, I see his address is listed as: Kyle House, Clareen, Birr, King’s County, Ireland

I haven’t been able to find Kyle House anywhere, but have seen photos of beautiful Clareen.

Research tells me that Kyle (Coill = forest) was a 604 acre townland on the outskirts of Kinnity Most of the lan din Kyle was owned by the government but T Hipwell, T Carroll and J Manifold also owned some of the land. There were 14 tenants and their families on the land.

Are there records of Hernons linked with Kyle or Clareen?

Kindest regards from Australia,

Josephine Hernon

  • Hi Josephine

I am also researching Hernons from Offaly and it would be great to see if there is any connection or if I can at least help you with your research.  Can you give any further information that would help to identify your Grandfather John and his family.  Details you would find on Birth, Marriage and Death certs would be most useful if you have them.  Or details of when and where he emigrated to.  If you don't want to post it here you can email me at Kildare@IrelandXO.com

    Thank you.
