  • Ephraim HEWITT was born in Ireland about 1810 to unknown parents.  He married Lydia SHARP, date unknown but a guess would be about 1832. Lydia was born about 1812, the daughter of Samuel Sharp and Isabella (maiden name unknown).
  • Children of Ephraim and Lydia who were born in Ireland are Elizabeth Jane about 1834, Ephraim 10 April 1840, William about 1842 and Isabella about 1846.
  • Ephraim, Lydia and chldren came to the United States in May 1860 aboard the Saranak and  arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I would like to know where in Ireland they were from, if there is still family living there and more about Ephraim and Lydia's parents, etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Lisa,

I had a look for the Hewitts.

There is a site called rootsireland.ie which is a pay-per-view site but I did find some likely candidates.

Lydia Sharpe with parents Samuel and Isabella was born in County Cavan in 1813.

There were no Ephraim Hewitts born 1810 + / - 5 years but there was an Edward.

    I couldn't find a marriage record.

Elizabeth Huet was born in 1835 in Cavan.

Maybe if you purchase one of the records (about $5) you would have a parish to work on.

Alternatively, Griffiths Valuation was done in Cavan before 1860 when the family emigrated and there are 39 Hewitts on Griffiths in Cavan. Griffiths is freely searchable. There are no Ephraims but there is an Edward. The parishes are all given and the family seems to be concetrated in a couple of them.

I googled Irish phone books, searched Hewitt Cavan and ther is one - Samuel at Oldtown Cavan (049) 433 2693. It might be worth writing to him - you never know your luck!

You could also do another post mentioning Cavan so that a Cavan expert could assist.

    Cheers

  • I have a question...do birth records go back far enough (1813) that I might be able to find out the maiden name of Isabella, mother of Lydia Sharpe and wife of Samuel Sharp in County Cavan?

  • Yes on rootsireland.ie but I tried to search for Isabella 1813 Cavan but it insisted on 3 letters of a surname!

Isabella's surname could be on the birth/baptism record of Lydia but you need to register on rootsireland.ie and purchase it (about $5)
