Hello - I am descended from the Hobbs of Killimor. I have 9 Hobbs siblings and their spouses born in Killimor from abt 1804-1821, with about half, along with various neices and nephews, going to various places in America while the other half remained in Galway. I am looking for the names of the parents of these siblings. One of the siblings, Fr Martin Hobbs (b1812-1871), became a curate in Killimor in 1836, Clonfert Parish (later Hopkins) 1837, Abbeygormican (later Mullagh) 1839, Duniry 1845, Kilnadeema 1847 and after which he left to serve as a priest in Wisconsin where he established new parishes and churches in the wilderness. It was suggested that the Galway church/parishes may have records of his parents names in his paperwork as a curate/priest. (I have been unable to find any birth/baptism certificates via the Ancestry Irish Parish database of any of the siblings but have found them for their children.) Do you think this church angle might work and where could I find this info? Thank you very much - Monica Hobbs
The Hobbs siblings are:
Catherine Hobbs/John Clarke (remained in Galway)
Michael A Hobbs/Catherine Finnerty (remained in Galway)
Thomas Hobbs (Sr) b1804/Mary Dignam (remained in Galway)
Mary Hobbs 1810-abt 1870/Michael J Daly 1800-1845 (remained in Galway - their children went to Kentucky)
John Hobbs 1811-1852/Hannah 1817-1844 (shoemaker, married in NY, Hannah died on visit to Killimor abt 1846 but not clear is she was from there, John died in New Orleans)
Fr Martin Hobbs 1804-1871 (died in Wisconsin)
Patrick Hobbs abt 1811-1877/Bridget Lowry 1811-1878 (died in Pennsylvania)
Anne Hobbs 1815-abt1871/Patrick Larkin b1810 (remained in Galway but may have visited Wisconsin - children went to Wisconsin and Iowa)
Denis Hobbs 1821-1880/Sarah Bell 1831-1899 (Shoemaker, married in Wisconsin, Sarah from Antrim, died in Wisconsin)

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I assume you know that the records for Killimor and Tiernascragh RC parish do not start until 1831 which explains why you can't locate any records for the nine siblings.
Here is a link to the web site for the Diocese of Clonfert http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/ At the bottom of the page is their e-mail address and I would contact them to see if there are any records on Fr. Hobbs.
Is there any consistency with the name of the first son for Thomas, Patrick, Michaell, John and Denis? Might give you a lead on the likely father's name for the nine Hobbs siblings.
I located a January 2014 message on our board from an Alison Kissling who is a descendant of Thomas Hobbs. I assume you know Alison but here is the message.

Thank you Roger for your help! The best thing you sent is the message from Allison. I dont' know her and I have little information on Thomas Hobbs/Mary Dignam but now I do thanks to you.
I also did not know records for the Killimor and Tiranascragh RC Parish only started in 1831. Why is that? Were they destroyed or was a new Parish started? If so, what Parish (es) would they have likely belonged to before that? (The Hobbs have been in Killimor area for 400 years)
And thank you for the Clonfert Diocese link. D you know if the other parishes Fr Hobbs worked at were also part of Clonfert Diocese? If not, I will of course ask the Diocese.
And, finally, good suggestion but the naming pattern is so unclear because I am missing Michael Hobbs' birthdate and some others. Without that I don't know where he fits in the lineup. Also they sometmes go by their middle name and reverse the name order. Here's what I get from the siblings and their known children:
SIBLINGS ORDER THOMAS JOHN PATRICK ANNE NEXT GEN: PATRICK JOHN
Michael?no dates Michael?no dates William Henry Thomas? no dates James (should be paternal grandfather) William Patrick Michael
Thomas Patrick?no dates John John Edward (her grandfather? No bros have this) John John
John Thomas Michael Martin (should be the Martin William
Patrick Martin Patrick father's name, but father is Patrick) Henry Thomas
Martin Leo Joseph
Dennis Robert
Joseph
I could guess that the father's name is Michael, John, Thomas, Patrick, Martin or William . sigh. Any ideas?

The records prior to 1831 were likely lost/destroyed. Actually 1831 is early for Galway parishes.Likely all of the parishes were Fr. Hobbs was assigned were in Clonfert Diocese Here is a map of the current parishes in the Diocese of Clonfert. Some of the parish names may have changed http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/parishes
Too bad about the lack of con sistency with the names of the oldest sons. I was hoping that 3 or 4 out of 5 would have the same name.

Thank you for all your help Roger. The Portumna lead was excellent - found out the brother of Thomas Hobbs' wife, Peter Dignan, went to New Zealand and was involved in the founding of Auckland and its leadership. Would have never thought to look there.

Thank you for getting in touch with such great information. My family has been in touch with the Hobbs in Lissaniska since the 90s. They unfortunately don't have this ancestral information, Is this the family you are thinking of or is there another one I might try look for?
