Dear Ireland XO Community

Greetings from South Australia, this is my first post seeking information.  I am researching my ancestors, primarily;

On my paternal side: Family ‘Hogan’ from County Clare

My g-g-grandfather Patrick Hogan born circa 1816 and his wife Mary (nee McTigue) born circa 1811 emigated to South Australia in 1852 on the ‘Chatham’, with children Biddy (Bridget?) b1836 (16), Patrick b1837 (15), Mary b1840 (12), Michael b1842 (10), John b 1847 (5), Margaret 1851 (1)

Michael Hogan b1842 is my g-grandfather.  No history of the McTigue family, so it would be good to get any information on the McTigues.

On my maternal side: Family ‘Hoban’ from County Kilkenny

My g-g-g-grandfather Patrick Thomas Hoban born c1808 in Ireland, died 1896 in Adelaide, South Australia.  No details of his wife.  Women who married into the Hoban family; Mary Dwyer born circa 1830 and Mary Cantwell born circa 1828.  My g-g-grandfather on the maternal side of the Hoban family was Thomas Gaffney born circa 1835 County Wicklow who married Catherine Murphy/Mulvey in 1864 in South Australia.

In both families, I have researched a lot of history from the time the Hogan and Hoban family ancestors emigrated to South Australia but know nothing of their prior family history in Ireland.  I have researched many other Hogan families who arrived in South Australia but cannot connect them to my family tree or back to their heritages in Ireland.

I have identified 20 Hogan men born from circa 1770 to 1800 that emigrated from Ireland to South Australia.  These Hogan men could be closely related eg brothers or cousins as the Irish tended to be very clannish in their emigrations.

I hope you can assist with my investigations.

  • Hi Gerry,

    McTigue - Co. Clare - Tithe Records - 1825 - 1826

The Tithe Record for Co. Clare has 12 "McTigue's".

I attach a record for a "McTigue and Hogan" in the parish of Clareabbey - now - Clarecastle/Ballyea.

They can be accessed at www.nationalarchives.ie - free site.

There is a parish record which I will check later and get back to you.

The Clare County Library  www.clarelibrary.ie may be of assistance

    Regards,

  • Thanks for your information to date McCoy.  I found that Buncraggy is located south of Ennis, so that is a discovery in itself.  Any births, deaths, marriages would be helpful if you can access them.

  • Hi Gerry,

The earliest baptism I have found is of a Michael McTigue in August 1827 in the parish of  Doora. www.catholicregisters@nli.ie - NationalLibrary. Page 1 at bottom.

They begin in 1821 and Marriages 1823. Records for Clarecastle /Ballyea are from 1853, so they are too late.

The earliest gravestone is in 1888 in the Killone Abbey cemetery for a Bridget McTigue aged 23 years and was erected by her mother Margaret McTigue. A Thomas McTigue 1904 in the same cemetery.

Ballyea church cemetery: Patrick McTigue 1980, Michael McTigue 1981, Margaret McTigue 1990.

I checked subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie for the marriage of Patrick Hogan and Mary McTigue in County Clare - 1830 - 1850 with no result. Likewise for the baptisms of children of same.

A baptism for a Margaret Hogan in 1850 in parish of Kilmacrehy - North Clare. Father: Pat Hogan and Mother: Mary. No surname. There were "McTigue's" in this parish also. Another surname recorded there was "McTeague" . This family are recorded as Protestant.

You will need to consult with your relatives in Australia to ascertain what information they have on the family.

  • Hi McCoy

A pity about the lack of information about the McTigues.  However in my family tree I do have a Margaret Hogan born 8 May 1850 to Patrick and Mary (nee McTigue) Hogan.  My baptismal record is 9 May 1850 which aligns with your information.

The information about the Kilmacrehy Parish - North Clare, is additional location information as it was assumed that the family came from the Liscannor area but to date no real evidence.  Website advises that the ‘ruins of the old parish church lie near the coastal village of Liscannor.’

Fingers crossed that there may be ‘McTigue’ or ‘McTeague’ family historians out there who may be able to assist me at some stage.

Thanks for your help to date, it is much appreciated.

  • Thanks very much McCoy.  The handwriting is a bit difficult to read at times.

Does the first record read: 1843 – Sept 9 - Ml (Michael) Hogan of Pat & Mary McTeigue sp (sponsor) Mary Healy & Thos (Thomas) O’Donnell?  If so the spelling of McTeigue is different from my record of McTigue.  This is a pretty exciting discovery as Michael is my great-grandfather and I only had the year of his birth, 1843.

I think I have the second record: Margaret, born May 8 1850, Baptised May 9 to parents Pat & Mary Hogan, sponsors John and Margaret Kinnane.

    Very much appreciated!

  • Hi Gerry,

The entry for Michael on September 21st is not unusual, as even families have their surnames spelled differently.

There is a John McTeigue in Clareabbey - Griffiths - attached. In South East Galway there is Widow McTiegue - Tithe Record - Ballinakill

See attached by John Grenham - Irish Ancestors.

In regard to the Tithe Records. ensure that the relevant parish is shown on the top of the page, as there are errors in transcription.

    Good Luck with the Research,
