Hi folks, I'm descended from Corneils Hogan, who is buried at Noughaval cemetery. The Hogans were farming at Tullagh Upper. According to the family story, he married Bridget Mee(?) in around 1812 and he died in 1819 aged 33. I'd love to know more about Bridget. There is no death record. Corneil's son married Mary Quin (b c1819) in 1845 (the parish register is missing for this year). They had a child Bridget in Kilfenora before moving to Australia. I cant fiund Bridget in the parish register. The sotry says she stayed in Ireland and came out to Australia years later. Mary's death cert said her father was Murtagh Quin, who was farming at Ballykeal North. The parish priest at the time was Andrew Quin: relative? Uncle? I'd love to find out who Mary's mother was. I've looked at the Clare Library site, Griffiths, Tithe books, parish registers, civil records and family tree websites. I'd love to know if a local person knows more. Often there are still local family stories ...

  • Hi IMcBurney:

It sounds as if your next step is to look at some local history in or around the Kilfenora area.  You might find the Clare Library website has some information about local historical societies.  I know that North Clare has a local historical group and that the Kilfarboy History Society is also very active.  If you go back into the library, click on the links for history:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/intro.htm and you might find further information about Kilfenora or the area.  Yditions of the ou might also check out the previous published editions of The Other Clare at this link:  http://www.duchasnasionna.eu/other_clare/journal.html

If you need any further assistance, I would recommend that you contact the Local Studies Centre via email as both archivists and librarians are very knowledgeable and helpful.  Their email address is:  localstudies@clarelibrary.ie

Please consider creating an Ancestor profile about one of the ancestors that you mentioned in your post.  This may also assist you with your research.  The link to create an Ancestor profile is:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

The best of luck with your research.

    All the best,

  • Hi IMcBurney

I’m from Australia. I have a record for a Maryarel (Mary) Quinn born 1815 in Smithstown, County Clare.  Around 1835 Mary married James Hogan born 1820 in Smithstown, County Clare.  They had 2 sons, John b1842 & Thomas b1849 and a daughter Bridget Mary (Mary) born in 1844.  All 3 children were born in Ireland.  John & Thomas lived long lives and both died in South Australia but Mary died in New York in 1911.

If you think that there is a chance that these might be the family that you are looking for, let me know.

  • HI, I have a David MEE (b c1806) who lived around Kilfenora. He married an Ellen SHAUGHNESSY and they had an Austin (b 1856, who died soon after) and a John (b 1857 who emigrated to Australia in 1875 on the Hesperides). Ellen, unfortunately died soon after giving birth to John.

David remarried, Anne / Bridget McNAMARA and they went on to have Michael (b 1863-1943, who did not marry) and Mary (b1864-1947) who married but did not have any children. I believe that marriage was to a HOGAN but I'm not sure on that.

Get back to me if anything there rings a bell.
