Looking for information about William Hopkins in newtownbutler. He was a merchant. My 2nd great grandfather. His daughter is Jane Ann Hopkins, born 1849,  my great grandmother. Jane and James Elliott were married in newtownbutler, moved to USA about 1882

I am looking for more family and information about them.

Thank you in advance

  • In 1864, a William Butler was listed as head of household in Griffith's Valuation of Fermanagh:

  • This looks like William Hopkin’s death in 1887 aged 80, a widower:

I can’t see a death for his wife 1864 to 1887. So I assume she died before 1864 (ie before statutory registration began).

No Hopkins in that part of Fermanagh in the 1901 census. Family seem likely to have been Church of Ireland. You might want to check their records in PRONI for baptisms, marriages and burials.

PRONI has this probate abstract which seems likely to refer to your family:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of William Hopkins late of Newtownbutler County Fermanagh Grocer a Bachelor deceased who died 6 September 1866 at same place were granted at Armagh to William Hopkins of Newtownbutler aforesaid Grocer and Whitesmith the Father and only next of kin of said deceased.

William who died in September 1866 was 21. His death cert is not available to view on line free but you can order a copy of it from GRO Roscommon or view it on the GRONI site for £2.50 (sterling).
