I am a decendant Mary Anne Hough or Haugh, daughter of Bridget Mannion and John Hough who married in the Catholic Chapel Killoran June of 1869. Mary immigrated to the United States in the 1890s and settled in Bristol Pennsylvania just outside Philadelphia where she married my great great grandfather Michael Augustus Kelly. She went by the surname spelling Howe and spelling her mother's maiden name as Manning as there were not defined spelling rules and this is how they were interpreted as English standard.

  • Hi

Many thanks for leaving your genealogy message. I will forward your message to a volunteer in Abbeygormican / Mullagh parish. I have a copy of The Irish Folk lore commission / Schools project done in the 1938 period. I know it lists Hough surname on it.  I will copy / scan this document for you.I

n 1937 the Irish Folklore Commission, in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation, initiated a revolutionary scheme in which schoolchildren were encouraged to collect and document folklore and local history.

Over a period of eighteen months some 100,000 children in 5,000 primary schools in the twenty-six counties of the Irish Free State were encouraged to collect folklore material in their home districts. The topics about which the children were instructed to research and write included local history and monuments, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, songs, customs and beliefs, games and pastimes, traditional work practices and crafts, etc. The children collected this material mainly from their parents and grandparents and other older members of the local community or school district. Now known as the Schools' Manuscript Collection, the scheme resulted in more than half a million manuscript pages of valuable material.

  • I have looked at the census and griffiths before and never saw a connection until now. :)

There is a real possibility of this Patrick in the census being a brother to my great great great grandfather John Hough, especially if this is the only Hough/ Haugh family in Ballyvaheen. Maybe he eventually got the family farm. John's father was Michael. It is likely they are the two listed in the griffiths evaluations. Is there a year for these evaluations?

I did a generic search on www.rootsireland.ie for a Patrick Hough marriage record with spouse Mary. I found Patrick Hough married Mary Glynn and fathers Michael Hough of Ballyvaheen and John Glynn of Coolagh. This is exciting!

Patrick's mother, Mary lived with him in 1901 and this would explain the name choice of Mary as John and Bridget's first child.

Bridget Mannion's father James in also listed in Ballyvaheen in the griffiths.

This is definately leeding me in the right direction! Thank you!

    Warm Regards,

  • After some research. I realized Patrick is a nephew of my great great great grandfather, John Hough. Patrick is the son of Michael Hough 1832- 1864 and Mary Donovan 1825 - 1910. If I have done my research correctly, John and Michael are the son's of Michael Hough 1798 - 1868. There is also a strong possibility of a James Hough 1823 - 1903 being another Son of Michael. I cannot find information matching the forename James beyond the 1901 census for him. I have a feeling it is a middle name or was originally written as Jas and transcribed as John. He had  a son James as well and I should be able to find a record for him because he was born abt 1878. They can be found under the surname Hough or Haugh in either Ballyvaheen or Eskerboy.
