Family hearsay believe our 'Brien' name was previoulsy known as 'Hourihan-O'Brien' .... pre1700? (of Cork). .

A few back I learned of a 'John Hourihan' (of Dublin)  - who clamed his name was previously 'Hourihan-O'Brien' from Leap.

Can anyone else help  further of this 'Hourihan-O'Brien' name?

Thanks Bunty

  • Bunty,

Have you seen this website? http://jointprojects.dnagen.org/surnames/Hourihane.html

    It includes the followiing:

“In the article “What’s In a Name?” (The Septs, October 1992), author and genealogist Nora Hickey noted that Hourihane was one of several agnomens for O’Brien (another Dalcassian family) around Barryroe (presumably near Clonakilty?). New research in 2018 has identified a possible Hourihane-Brien family from Bantry. They are categorized in project Group 4. It is too soon to know if they are part of a larger group of Hourihane-Briens bearing the same genetic signature. They are not Dalcassian.”

  • Thank you - 'yes' , I had seen that.  That's been about all!

I'm still hoping to find others who share similar/same family background.
