I am looking for help in tracing my ancestors the Howe family please. Julia and Mary came to live in Sheffield in the 1860s. I recently found Mary on the 1881 UK census and her birthplace is shown as Ferryglass , I think this should be Terryglass as on later Census is says Tipperary, Ireland. Julia married in Sheffield in 1862 and on her Marriage certificate her father is named as Martin & his occupation is a Farmer. On the parish records for Mary Howe & Charles McGee at St Vincent's Church, Sheffield her father is also detailed as Martin. I know the families knew each other but never realised they were most probably sisters.
Julia died in 1877 aged 41 years. Mary died in Dec 1917 aged 76. I hope somebody can help me look to see if there are any entries in the parish records for their births. I have found a Julia Howe 1862 record and photo in the Terryglass old cemetery. Possibly their mother. Thank you for reading this and for any advice or help given. Hello Louisa, After my great grandfather Michael Darcy from Borrisokane, Tipperary migrated to Queensland Australia, his brother Patrick followed him with his wife Winifred Howe. Winifred's parents were John Hough and Sarah Quigley. Their children William, Patrick, John, Margaret, Anne, Winifred and Mary appear in the Terryglass Baptism Register between 1840 and 1857 with the Hough spelling. I haven't researched them further but it suggests that with your connection, there was a large extended family. For each child the parents' residence was mostly different but I couldn't easily match them to Griffiths Valuation records. John Dwyer, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

Thank you for your reply. Had a look at the Terryglass records and found a 1837 baptism record for Bridget Howe, parents were Martin Howe & Ellen Tierney but no Julia or Mary found yet. As you say it's probably one big family. Lots of Howe & Hogans in Tipperary. Best Wishes from Sheffield, UK

Hi Louisa
Found the following records which may be of some assistance
Judith Hough born 9/2/1836 to Martin Hough and Ellen Tierney Slevior Terryglass
Michael Hough 9/2/1837 same parents and address
Bridget Howe. 9/8/1938 parents Martin Howe and Ellen Tierney Slevoir Terryglass
Mary Hough 13/19/1939 same details
Thomas Hough 12/11/1941 same details, as you can see Bridget surname is given as Howe all others Hough, could be a misspelling either way, Slevoir bounds the village of Terryglass on its northern end

Hi Bill thank you so much for all this information. Very helpful for my research. We have never known any Judiths in the family though and the name Julia's has been on all the UK census records & Marriage certificate which we have a copy of. Another mystery to solve!
Best wishes from SheffieldLouisa

Hi Louisa,
Hope am not complicating matters further by adding that very often certainly in my part of the country in the past the christened name Judith was often shortened to Julia and obviously Judy don't let that throw you off the track as it may not be the case in your family

Hi Bill thank you for this local knowledge. We are as certain as we'll ever be that it's our Howe family. Have since found another daughter, Margaret Howe baptised 27 Sept 1848 in Killimor & Tiranascragh parish in Clonfert diocese. Also from another family tree on Ancestry, I have a possible Marriage record for Martin Howe & Ellen Tierney, date 8 Feb1935 in Terryglass.
Some years ago we holidayed in Mountshannon. Never knowing we were so close to our roots.
Thanks again for your prompt and helpful repliesLouisa
