My great great grandfather was William Hurry. With his wife Nancy Carey and nine children, they all migrated to Australia in 1841. William was born 1791 in Golden, County Tipperary, Nancy in 1794 in Kilfeakle, Tipperary. They were married in 1816.

They migrated with the surname, "Hurry" which was then recorded as "Holley".

Keen to find any information about these ancestors and anyone related living in Ireland.

The RC records for Golden/Kilfeacle parish start in 1833 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0267  I searched the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and likely located the baptismal records for the two youngest children.

Thomas Hally baptized March 8 1836 at Golden/Kilfeacle church father William Hally mother Anne Carey  They lived in Springmount.

Honora Hally baptized November 29 1840 Golden/Kilfeacle church father William Hally mother Anne Carey.

Note: Anne and Nancy were interchangeable.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Many thanks. So, a different spelling again for the surname!  I have Nancy also recorded as Ann, Agnes.

    Will write again.

  • Thank you again for finding these two relatives. The surname certainly looks like 'Hally'. They sailed 4/4/1841 to NSW in Australia and their ship's documents (Helen)  clearly say 'Hurry'. Perhaps the confusion was in the pronunciation when they were registered for the ship. There ere 8 children not 9 as baby Catherine died before they left ireland. All 8 children arrived safely here.

When were marriage records started in Kilfeacle? Their eldest son was Richard. In 1841 he was 17 years old so his birth and baptism would have been around 1824. Mother for both Thomas and Honora is listed as Anne Carey. Does that mean William and Ann may not have been married or did baptism documents usually have mother listed in her maiden name?

One of the sponsors for Honora is shown as Julianna Welch. Ann's mother was Judy Welch.

The family did very well in Sydney. They settled in St Peters, Sydney. Today St Peters is very much in the middle of Sydney. Their original property was on what is now the Princess Highway, a major road through Sydney.

One of their children, Patrick Holley was my ancestor. One of his son's was John Holley who was the father of Edith Holley. One of Edith's sons is a catholic priest. He is now retired but was Bishop of three large dioceses in NSW, Armidale, Bathurst and Parramatta.

I will join FindMyPast but thank you in the meantime.

See link in my prior response. Kilfeacle/Golden records (baptisms and marriages) start in 1833.

RC baptismal records almost always showed the maiden name of the mother.
