I am looking for information on the Casey family. I recently came across a mass card for a Roger Casey. He appeared to have lived from app. 1837 until 1904. The 1901 census lists him living at house 5. He may have had a first wife, Johanna nee Clancey, then married a second time to a wife, possible named Mary. ( Mary may have had a sister named Ellen, living in London. )
Roger may have had a relative/sister? named Mary who would have been born app. 1835. Mary emigrated to Brooklyn, NY, US. She married William Gorman, gave birth to Jullia, who married John H. Copley - my great grandfather.
I am new to genealogy and would appreciate any info. I am especially looking to find out when family might have left Ireland and what ships they may have sailed on.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your message.
Civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864, so any births, marriages or deaths before this were recorded by the local parish church so this is where you will have to look for information. If you can find Roger and Mary?s birth records it will give you the names of their parents. You may also be able to find their marriage records if they both married in Kilfinane parish.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Kilfinnane parish, follow this link:
For information on Church of Ireland records check:
http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
There are also some church records available online: www.familysearch.org and www.rootsireland.ie Please note that Roots Ireland is a paying website.
Any marriages, deaths, births etc. that took place after 1864 will also be in civil records. These records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
For more inforamtion on them go to:

You could also check for record of the family in the land acts pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
For information on Mary?s emigration, you should check the US National Archives:

You can search the databases of passengers that arrived in New York at:
Ellis Island: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that some of these are helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

Hi Elsie
I look after queries for Darragh (RC parish of Glenroe & Ballyorgan) but I did not notice your query becauses it is posted on the Kilfinane page but if I can help I certainly will.
I have already set up an information page about Spittle on the site. It contains some information 3 houses where Casey families lived. T
http://www.irelandxo.com/group/darragh-limerick/townlands/spittleI believe all of these Casey were related and there was more than one Roger. Houses 4 and 5 (Valuation Office numbers) both had men called Roger during the late 19th century. The Tithe Applotments of 1831 list Roger Casey as does an older document I have seen that lists Spittle residents with turf cutting rights in Ruppulagh.
