I am in Australia am looking for information on my Grandmother Bedelia Fox (e) born in Parish of Kilteevan Co Roscommon in 1876.

I Believe she is somehow related to the Late TD of Roscommon Tom Foxe who died in 2000. I know nothing of her Family and her father. I would appreciate whatever information comes forward and if somebody can point me in the direction of what times were like when she was living in Ireland.

Thanks

There are no records for a Bedelia Fox. I did locate an 1874 civil birth record for a Bridget Fox. Her parents were Thomas Fox and Catherine Farrell. They lived in Derryconny townland in Kilbride parish. Kilbride parish borders Kilteevan civil parish.

See first record at this link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

Do you have any other information regarding Bedelia Fox and her family such as siblings?

  • Thanks for such a quick reply. I have just started to do the Research on my Family Tree. So many names and Cousins gets me confused easilly. While I have some paper records I have also saved a lot of information I have perused to my Favourites plus quite a few of my Cousins have gone to Ireland and Roscommon and met up with our relatives there a few times.

However, the information I have gleaned just tends to muddy the waters of my research because checking the scant info I have at this time does not line up with the small amount of paper records I have seen. It is possible she may have changed her name and I thought I saw somewhere in our family records that her birth was recorded in the Presbytery of the Catholic Church Parish of Kilteevan.

My mothers maiden name was Thelma Catherine Gray. So Bridget could well be her mother and maybe they did live Derryconny townland in Kilbride parish especially as it borders Kilteevan.

I have been in contact with one of my Cousins who has done some research on our family but at this stage his research does not quite line up with what I have found but he and his brothers have been to Roscommon a number of times and met up with our relations. So I know that or people are still there or were back in 2000.

I will now check Bridget Fox. Fox is her surname I believe, but at this stage I can take nothing for granted at this stage and will try to prove or question all the information I have.

    Again

Thanks for your help and time.

  • Roger,

Further to my reply to your information where you asked if I know of any siblings of Bedelia Fox, unfortunately I do not at this stage. But until I can gather more information I believe that tracing back through the lineage of Tom Foxe the Late td of Roscommon is my most promising line of attack.

I believe he changed his spelling of Fox to Foxe when he first went to school. I have been told he is a Relative.

And Bedelia changing her name from Bridget could be possible having a bit of inkling of the dynamics of the family at the time. This makes the research more interestring.

  • As this thread is evolving and I am acquiring information it is rumoured Bedelia Fox met a John Illidge Gray jnr.in London. His family emmigrated to Australia on the Sailing Ship Macquarie in 1889.

Now, this is where it gets confusing, Young John was 17 at this time and Bedelia 13 if my dates are correct. I believe  John's are. The rumours are she followed him to Australia. His family in Australia were strong Presbyterians and were for God, King and Country, Stiff Upper Lip and Rule Britannica.

Bedelia was a devout Catholic and after she married John Illidge Gray jnr they had 3 children. A grandson became a Marist Brother ( my Cousin ) He told me our Grandmother Bedelia is related to the Brennans who went to America where a decendant became a Priest and he thought later became  an Archbishop.in the States.

I do not know how the two got over that age old division and bigotry but I guess it proves Love is Blind.

  • Thank you  Roger.

I am like a bloodhound now. I started this Family Search with the intentions of following my Father's side especially his mother. I thought my mother's side would be non complicated because of the number of relatives here who have been to Roscommon and met up with family there.

Yet, the more research I do from the records seems to be at odds to what I have been told. Fortunately, I have the opportunity to contact those who have gone to Ireland and show them my research and confirm their rercollection. Hopefully they will be able to show where I have gone wrong, if infact my research is.

If Bedelia Fox did follow John Illidge Gray to Australia I will have to search when she left Ireland. The Fact that she may have been in London and her young age might indicate she and her family left Roscommon a lot earlier then we thought.

    Thanks again
