Is Innis Corthea likely to actually be Enniscorthy? Family lore always said we came from County Wexford. In a letter found from 1865 written by an ancestor born in the USA. He referred to Innis Corthea as the birthplace of his father. I have not located any place in Ireland with that name no less in County Wexford. I made the leap to Enniscorthy, but have not found any proof of their existence there before 1830 when they left for Ontario, Canada. Is Enniscorthy likely to be Innis Corthea or is there another town I am overlooking?

  • The Irish name for the town of Enniscorthy is 'Inis Córthaidh', see entry on the official placename database, pronounced the way you have seen in that letter, so very likely the place described.

There are a number of other towns in Ireland starting with the same Ennis/Inis prefix, e.g. Enniskerry, Enniskillen, Inistioge, Inishannon etc but no others that I can think of that would translate to anything similar to 'Innis Corthea'.

  • Joyce:

I agree with Shane. The records for Enniscorthy RC parish go back to 1794 and are available on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Can you provide some names and dates and we can search for records.

  • Thank you Shane. That gives me more hope that we are on the track!
Roger, Thank you for your offer. I am traveling out of town and don't have access to my records, but will be sure to post some names and dates as soon as I get home!
