i have found a couple listed in Ireland, Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage License Bonds Indexes, 1623-1866 with a date of 1838 - would this have been the year of the marriage or could it have been when they obtained the license and possibly married later? they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in New Zealand in 1894 - maybe it was delayed for some reason!

  • The license would only have been valid for a fairly short period of time. 6 or 12 weeks perhaps. So if they married a few years later they would have needed another licence. Or it's a different couple. Those licences were for couples marrying in the Church of Ireland (ie Anglican). Does that tie in with your family's denomination?

  • thak you for your rely. i would think that the religion here would have been compatible with that shown. i wonder if they actually received any certificate or paperwork at the time of the marriage and even if they did it could have been lost.with time and travel and after 50 years the memory a little blurred!

  • I don't think they did get a certificate in the 1830s. For the Church of Ireland, I think they just entered the details in the church register and that was it. Paper certificates were issued from 1845 onwards.
