Ivory is an very rare surname in Ireland and one I would have expected to have English roots ( people in service who came to Ireland). My great grandmother was Ellen Ivory who was born in Vicar Street Kilkenny 23/9/1865 and married James Byrne of Leugh and they are buried in Tulla Graveyard. Her Father was James Ivory of Muckalee born 23/1838 and his father was Patrick Ivory of Conahy born 29/9/1809. James was married to Elizabeth Nowlan and Patrick to Judith Cuddy

My primary focus is in finding Ivory connections. All other streams of my family popped up with cousins during my youth but there never was an Ivory link. There is no doubt that all the Ivory's were Catholic so that seems to rule out the being English. I would like to broaden the number of Ivory's and get back to the 1700's to see any link to the architect Thomas Ivory who was a mentor to James Hoban from Callan who designed the White House in Washington DC. We also have Hoban's in our line so trying to join to dots

  • Hello, according to the book McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland the name Ivory is of French origin (de Iverio) and closely identified with Waterford, adjoins Kilkenny, since a Cromwellian soldier William Ivory settled there, this would be circa 1649.

The Royal Society of Architects of Ireland have produced a directory of architects in Ireland from the 1500s I think and may contain some names to assist.

You could see if any of the private Facebook genealogy groups associated with the various counties also.

    Good Luck
