I am trying to find the baptism and marriage records for Julia Coleman and James Walsh who lived in Ballinaltig (Watergrasshill) in 1901 (according to the Census). Julia and James married, but I cannot find any record on Roots or on Irishgenealogy.i.e that match their names. Having this information may help me trace any siblings.

According to the Census James was 56 years old, however, when he died in 1905 his age was given as 58 making his birth year between 1845 and 1847. Julia’s age on the Census was 52, but when she died in 1907 her age was 56 making her birth year between 1849 and 1851. Given her first child was born in 1864 this timeline does not work as she would have only been 13 years old and James 17 years of age.

Their first child Mary was born in 1864 and I have her record as well the records for their other children: Margaret 1864, Michael 1868, Thomas 1870, Johanna 1872, Anne, 1874, Timothy 1876 and John Joseph 1880 which name James and Julia as their parents living in Ballinaltig. (This information is available on FamilySearch and verified on irishgenealogy.ie).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  What makes the search more complicated is that Watergrasshill is in the Diocese of Cork and Ross while many of the surrounding parishes are in the Diocese of Cloyne which means you have to go to a different source for records. ( Roots Ireland for Cloyne diocese). As you indicated a marriage record does not show up. However, I did locate a baptismal record for a son James in 1862 in Watergrasshill. This makes the ages in the census more understated. Julia was likely born 1845 or earlier.

Getting back to the marriage, likely Julia's parish was not Watergrasshill. The neighboring parishes all seem to have marriage reocrds in the 1860 time period. Possibly there is a gap which covers when the marriage occurred or maybe the priest never annotated the register.

Regarding Julia Coleman's baptismal record, there is a record in Fermoy in late 1845 which is a possibility. See below

  • Margaret:

I just noticed that www.irishgenealogy.ie does not have any Watergrasshill marriages and the NLI parish register only contains baptisms  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0099   Not sure if marriage records are available and possibly that is where the marriage occurred.

  • Thank you for your very quick response.and the information you have been able to find. I know that the ages on the census are often incorrect and it becomes a bit of a guessing game to try and find the correct record.

Your help is very much appreciated.
