I would like to know more about James Conmy and Anne Cleary who are my great grandparents, particularly:

When they were born,

Theie parents names (I believe Anne's parents were Patrick Cleary and Kate Maughan, but I am not certain)

When they married and,

Their siblings if any.

One of their seven children, Hannah Conmy, was born I believe in 1891 and emigrated to the United States. Hannah is my grandmother.

Thank you.

  • Hi Bill,

I attach Civil birth record of Honor Conby - 1890. Baptism - Kiltane October 19th 1890. Sponsors: James Conby and Bridget Conby.

James Conby apparently married into the household of Patrick Cleary - Glencullin Upper. See 1901 census attached.

You will be able to access the civil birth records of the Conby family - www.irishgenealogy.ie - Free site.  I did not find a marriage record for James Conby and Anne Cleary.

I will check for marriage of their parents later.

    Regards.

  • Bill,

Further to previous post, I have not located the marriage record of James Conmy and Anne Cleary. No record found for their parents. The 1911 census records  Anne Cleary has having been married for 22 years. Only 6 children are recorded as being alive.

In regard to siblings, there is a civil record of the marriage of John Conmy to Bridget Maughan on January 1st 1888. They have a daughter - Honor - registered in 1891. John may be a brother to James?

Civil records in Ireland are from January 1st 1864. Church records vary. You can check catholicparishregisters@nli.ie - National Library.

Patrick Cleary is recorded as being married in the 1901 census, but his wife is not recorded. She may be in hospital or a Nursing Home? He is not shown in the 1911 census, so he may have died.

  • Bill:

In addition to all the records that McCoy provided, I did find the 1864 civil birth record for Anne Cleary.

    See last record   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

From the subscription site Roots Ireland, there appears to be older siblings: Mary 1853 Owen 1857 Honor 1859 Catherine 1861.

I did not find a marriage record for Patrick and Catherine.

There is a death index record for a 41 year old Catherine Cleary who died in 1870. The death was registered in the Belmullet registration district. We expect that the actual death record images for the years 1864-1870 will be added to the www.irishgenealogy.ie data base in the near future. Patrick Cleary may have indicated married on the 1901 census record but in reality he was a widower. Patrick died in 1908. See fourth record.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I did not find a baptismal record for James Conmy in the Kiltane parish records.

  • Roger and McCoy,

    Thank you. Thank you!

I appreciate both of your research and responses.

However, there is an error in one of McCoy's reponses.

My great grandfather's name is James CONMY, not James CONBY. So there would not be a marriage record of James CONBY to Anne Cleary.

    James CONMY married Anne Cleary.

Anne gave birth to seven children, unfortunately, a son James was born on December 6, 1896 but died 5 months later on May 26, 1897. Hence the census showing six children.

    Thank you again.

Any other information and/or clarification is appreciated.

  • Hi Bill,

Apologies for the clerical error. I had checked for "James Conmy" and Anne Cleary, but no result.

I suggest that you contact the Secretary for the Diocese of Killala: secretary@killaladiocese.org to have the Kiltane parish records checked for their marriage.

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie has a record of a "Pat Conmy" being born to James Conmy and Anne Cleary on February 8th 1908 and having been baptised in Kiltane church on February 12th. Sponsors: John Cosgrove and Maggie Cosgrove. His birth is not shown in the Civil records, but his death at the age of 13 days is shown. His death was notified by his father: James Conmy, Glencullen.

The 1911 census records Anne Conmy having 13 children born alive. Roots web have a "Catherine Conmy" in 1889. I have checked the Civil records, but it shows "No Result".

    Best Wishes,

  • Hi Bill,

    Re: Catherine Conmy

I attach two records for a Catherine Conmy which would tend to confirm that she is the daughter of James Conmy and Anne Cleary.

    1 - www,rootsireland.ie - copy of Civil Record and 2 - Birth  Index - Civil Records 1890 - Belmullet - www.findmypast.ie

James Conmy and Anne Cleary probably married in early 1889?

Thank you again for these informative and thorough updates. I very much appreciate your time and effort.

As you suggested, I sent an email to secretary@killaladiocese.org to see if they have a record of James Conmy and Anne Cleary's marriage.

I hope they have the information.

And with your and Roger's help, I can now account for nine of James and Anne's children thirteen children, seven of whom died while infants or as children (three I now know-Catherine age 9, James at 5 months and Pat at 13 days) and six, including my grandmother Hannah who emigrated to the United States in 1915, who lived into their adult years.

    I'll keep researching.

If you find any other information, please let me know.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Bill,

www.rootsireland.ie has a record of a John Conmey being baptised in the parish of Aughoose/Bangor on December 19th 1856.

Father: James Conmey - Mother: Honor Conmey. Sponsors: Francis Conmey and Mary Conmey. Address: Balinunmera ((Bellanumera).

This John would appear to be the man who married Bridget Maughan in January 1888. He is recorded as being 30years of age in the Civil marriage record. The bridesmaid for Bridget was Anne Cleary. Bridget's address was Glencullen.

A James Conmy was baptised on October 9th 1859 in the parish of Aughoose/Bangor. His address: Bellannmera. His father recorded as James Conmy and his mother as Honor CONWAY. Sponsors: Thomas Conway and Ann Conway. I believe John and James were brothers?

Birth record of John Conmy's son - James - attached.

Bridget Maughan was possibly an aunt of Anne Cleary's mother - Catherine Maughan Cleary.

Griffith's Valuation records Francis and James Conmee in the townland of Bellanumera - Civil parish of Kilcommon. There is a Thomas Conway on the same sheet in a different townland. Glencullin Upper is also in the Civil parish of Kilcommon. Information taken in early 1850's and printed in 1855.
