Hello, can you help me find more details about my great-grandfather, James Duffy, and his family? He was born May 4,1865 and a Roman Catholic with an unknown occupation.

Ancestry.com has Cootehill as his Birth Registration Place.

He married Margaret Brady, also from County Cavan, on May 20, 1886, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA

His parents were Owen Duffy and Ann Duffy. Ann's maiden name is unknown.

Griffith's Valuation has an Owen Duffy who lived at Church Street, Drumgoon Parish.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Dennis,

A search of Subscription sites  www.rootsireland.ie - www.findmypast.ie and Free site www.irishgenealogy.ie did not shown any James Duffy with a father named Owen and mother "Ann"

There are 4 entries in the Civil records for Cootehill but the father is not recorded as "Owen". You can access those at www.irishishgenealogy.ie.

Roots Ireland have a James Duffy who was baptised in the parish of Killann, Co. Cavan on November 17th 1868. His father is recorded as "Owen" and his mother as "Rose Lynch".

I attach a transcript of the marriage of James Duffy and Maggie Lady (Brady).

Do you have a copy of that register?

    Regards,

    McCoy

  • Hello, would you be able to attach the birth record you have for James? It probably shows his townland, which would help in identifying the family in other records. (I looked for the birth record in the civil records at irishgenealogy.ie, with no success.)

About the name Owen...you will sometimes find it in Irish records as "Eugene."

  • Patricia,

Attached record of the baptism of James Duffy on November 17th 1868. No address given. There are two entries for a Margaret (1871) and Thomas (1874) with the address - Relaghan. Parents: Owen Duffy and Rose Lynch. In Griffith's the address is spelled Ralaghan in the Civil Parish of Shercock. Similar townland in Drumgoon Civil Parish.

In 1898 a Maggie Duffy married a Patrick Kangley in Baileborough. She apparently is the Margaret Duffy of Relaghan. See attached 1911 census record. Rose Duffy, Mother-in-Law is recorded.

  • The civil marriage record transcribed at FindMyPast does not contain all the data that is in the actual record. See below...

    vhttps://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

For instance, Maggie Duffy lived in the townland of Ralaghan and her father, Owen, was alive in 1898.

    I hope this helps.

    Dear McCoy and Patricia,

    Thank you for your assistance.

Attached are copies of their marriage certificate, James' naturalization petition, and the Birth Index from Ancestry.com. Please note that my mother's handwritten maiden names on the marriage certificate are suspect, but that's all I have to go on at this point. Also, according to my mother, both came from County Cavan. James and Margaret Duffy's U.S. Census reports are somewhat consistent with the 1900 Census reporting James' birth in May, 1865. That matches his self-reported age on his marriage certificate and naturalization petition.

I will be asking for your help gathering details about Margaret Brady as well but thought I should hold off on her information until after I have located more details about the Duffy family.

    Dear McCoy and/or Patricia,

In addition to the documents I posted last week, attached is a copy of James' death certificate. A Mary McCann was named as his mother as reported by a family member back in 1949. I have had no luck finding a record of the marriage between Owen (or John) Duffy and Mary McCann. Can you help locate one? Also, a church record of James' birth?
