I am trying to locate information on James C. or G. Getty(s) who was born abt 15 Jan 1816 in Co. Antrim.  He married Eliza Jane Agnew (b. 1815) about 1838.  Need parish/town information.  Do not know where married, ship taken, or port of arrival when migrating to New York State.  Thanks for any help.  Barb

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

It may be quite difficult to narrow down a townland/parish with just this information. Do you have anymore information that you can share?Do you have parents' names, the names of any siblings or children they may have had, their religious denomination? Do you know, roughly, when they emigrated?

You could try doing a search for them in Griffith's Valuation. This was a property valuation survey carried out in Ireland between 1848-1864. Although this does not offer any genealogical information it can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can do a search of this here:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

You could also try searching for them at https://familysearch.org/ Hopefully there may be some church record of them online and this will then give you the parish name.

Some other websites which may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

If you are unsuccessful with this you could contact the Ulster Historical Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

    Ulster Historical Foundation,

    49 Malone Road,

    Belfast BT9 6RY,

    Northern Ireland.

    Phone: +44(0) 28 9066 1988   Email: enquiry@uhf.org.uk

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

The births and marriage were long before the start of statutory registration of births in Ireland and so won?t be recorded centrally. You might find them in church records, if they have survived, but to do that you need to know which church they attended.

Unfortunately Agnew and Getty are extremely common names in Co Antrim ? there are 923 Agnews and 240 Gettys in the county in the 1901 census so it?s a bit of a needle in a haystack. Ideally you need to find something in US records that pinpoints where in Antrim they lived. Usual sources are censuses, wills, obituaries, gravestones, military records etc.
