James Friel, bc1787 in Ireland and died 13 Aug 1852 Glasgow. He married Elizabeth Butler at St Miron's Catholic Church, Paisley, Scotland on 10 Feb 1823. Witnesses were John McDivat and Margaret Campbell. Elizabeth Butler, bc1800 in Ireland, was daughter of James Butler, farmer and ? Campbell. In the 1851 census for Calton, Lanarkshire, they resided at 42 Rumford St., Glasgow. Their children included 1. Jane bc1824, d1899. Married John Duffy in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 2 Jun 1857 and relocated to New Bedford, Massachussetts; 2. James bc1825; 3. Felix bc1826; 4. Ann bc1828; 5. Margaret bc1835; 6. Elizabeth bc1838 married William McLaren in Glasgow; 7. Robert bc1840; 8. John bc1847; 9. Robert bc1852.           James Friel and Elizabeth Butler were ancestors of my husband. HIs Friel/ O'Friel/ Freel/ O'Freel DNA matches on Ancestry all trace back to Morris/ Maurice O'Friel/ O'Freel/ Freel, bc1713 Donegal, Donegal, who died in Cecil, Maryland 20 April 1778. He was buried at Swoope, Augusta Va. Morris married Catherine Bell, bc 1710-1720 Donegal, died 29 September 1779 Augusta Co., Va.   I'm trying to determine anything further on James Friel and Elizabeth Butler, as well as figuring out James's relationship with Maurice O'Friel. Can anyone shed any insight?

  • Maurice was an ancestor of mine. There are a bunch of James Freel's in our family dating back to the1700s here in the US, but none with a mtching year of birth. I did find a "Book of Freel" at the Family Search library in Salt Lake City today while I was here doing genealogy research. Feel free to contact me and we can share research if that interests you.

  • Hi Amanda. Thank you for your offer. What's posted on this message board is all I know regarding James. Perhaps James and Maurice shared a common ancestor or James descended from one of Maurice's siblings.. If you find anything further on Maurice's parents, siblings and their children who stayed in Ireland etc, I'd be very interested..
