  • Hello Leo,

    Many thanks for your message.

Irish Catholic parish records seldom go further back than the late 18th century, when most of the penal laws were removed. As far as I know, Whitechurch is part of the Catholic parish of Modeligo, baptisms for which start in 1846: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1098. It's possible that an earlier baptismal register survives but I wouldn't get your hopes up. If you email the parish priest, Fr Pat Gear (contact details here: http://www.cappoquin.net/catholic-church/modaff.html) he might be able to help you further. Registers for the Church of Ireland parish of Whitechurch were destroyed in the Four Courts fire in 1922. Have you any idea what townland James was from? That would help confirm which ecclesiastical parish he was baptised in.

A summary of some other Whitechurch sources is available here: https://www.johngrenham.com/c_parish/c_parish_main.php?civilparishid=2446&county=Waterford&civilparish=Whitechurch&CountyMap=. It's also possible that there is something in the Registry of Deeds; see here for more information: https://www.johngrenham.com/browse/retrieve_text.php?text_contentid=89

Wishing you all the best with your research,

    Cian

  • A James Herbert Dower who married Catherine Cashman settled in a small fishing community of Conche, Newfoundland in early 1800s.
Their first daughter Mary, married my great grandfather Martin Flynn who may have come from Belfast area.
Unfortunately we don't know much about their history before arriving here.
Dowers and Flynns still live in Conche.

  • Leo have also found the same James Herbert Dower on Ancestry and it says he was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England and he was married twice, the first time to Hortense De Rohan in France and all of his Children except one was with this women. His second wife was Catherine Cashman who he married in St. John's in 1917. She was 20 years old and he was around 37.

  • Yes, I have seen this info. However, many of the dates for his children coincide for the period after he married Catherine Cashman in 1817.
