My great grandfather, James Johns, was born in 1855 (Protestant) and on his RIC register and 1911 census it states his birthplace as Co. Wexford. On his marriage certificate in 1881 his father is Thomas Johns, farmer.

I have found a Thomas John on Griffith's valuation in Ballyduff with 37 acres of land. This address tallies with a Joseph Johns, a defendant in Petty Sessions in Ferns, Wexford.

Also, a red herring is a Thomas John I found in Waterford on Griffith's Valuation who lives next door to a William Hayes. James Johns married a Jane Hayes up in Mountmellick. This could just be a coincidence but maybe some connection?

Would appreciate some guidance as to how to move forward with this line of the family.

Many thanks.

  • The term 'Protestant' can refer to a number of different Christian Denominations in Ireland - e.g. Church of Ireland (Anglican), Presbyterian etc, Church of Ireland being the one with largest numbers. Unfortunately at present there are not very many of the registers for Co. Wexford available online, so searches for Church of Ireland records in this county can be difficult, in addition historic registers for a number of Church of Ireland parishes around Ireland have been lost. Currently RootsIreland (pay-website) includes transcripts for just two Church of Ireland parishes in Co. Wexford, additional transcripts of the Church of Ireland registers by the RCB Library are in progress as part of the Anglican Records Project.

There are a number of townlands in Co. Wexford named Ballyduff, plus some upper and lowers and two Ballyduffbegs, the Primary Valuation entry for Thomas John shows that he leasing a house and small garden  at the Ballyduff townland in Kilcomb civil parish in 1852. The parish is a little to the north of the town of Camolin. The parish of Kilcomb was part of the Church of Ireland Parish Union based in th neighbouring parish of Toombe/Tomb/Toome, along with Rossminoge. Unfortunately this parish is not one currently covered by RootsIreland, or the Anglican Records Project, the good news however is that the the available baptism, marriage and death/burial registers for this parish cover back to about 1770, the records are held by the Representative Body Church Library in South County Dublin.

  • Thank you for this - your local knowledge of the area helps me understand the various places mentioned on these documents and pinpoint more accurately where I need to concentrate my searches.
