Hi all,

I am trying to trace my ancestor James DUNNE who was born about 1838/9 the son of John Dunne and Catherine nee CUNEEN.

He migrated to Victoria, Aust about 1864 (age about 26) married, raised a family and died in Stawell, Victoria, 1899 (age 61) .

The records for him and his family here in Australia are scarce. I only have his death cert (no marriage cert. found...) It gives his place of birth as 'County Clare' only and describes his father as a farmer.

Griffiths valuation records a James R DUNNE farming in this parish. This is obviously not my ancestor's father, I suspect it not he as a young man either. Perhaps it could be a relative though...

There are no Dunne's in the 1901 Census for this Parish I believe.

Is there any trace of the Dunne's of this Parish and what happened to them? I hope you can help me include or exclude this parish from my searches.

cheers,

Barb

  • Dear Barb:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

In searching through the Tithe Applotment Books for County Clare (available on the Clare Library website), there are 2 listings for a John Dunne.

One is in the parish of Kilfintinan and the other is in the parish of Moyarta.

Kilfintinan parish is located in South East Clare and is today part of the parish of Cratloe.  The parish registers for Cratloe are available on the NLI website.  As to the parish of Moyarta, those records are also available through the NLI website.  You can check for them at the website:  http://www.nli.ie.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.  You can email me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
