I am Searching for their births in Ireland and deaths in Scsotland.

There is a 1841 Scotland Census entry that supports them living and havingh 3 children, Daniel, Rebecca and Thomas. in Camlachie, Scotland.

This is correct as Rebecca married the record sugests that Cathertine was about 16 years old when Daniel was born in 18i27 and Daniel was a mine worker at 14.

16 is well below marrying age and they may have fled Ireland for Scotland and perhaps never married.

I have found a Catherine Glen born c 1811 in Co Donegal and there is suip[posed to be something on RootsIreland.ie but I cannot find anything.

I  thought  perhaps that James/'s father is Daniel and Rebecca the name of Catherine's mother.  Thomas could belong to either of them.

Thanks

Patricia Smith

I hope someone is able to help me find some information rfelating to them.

  • Patricia,

In the 1841 census (only) adults ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so don't rely too heavily on Catherine being 16 when she had her first child. She might well have been 20. In addition, in the early 1800s folk in Ireland didn’t celebrate birthdays and often didn’t know exactly how old they were, so ages on official documents are often out by quite a few years. Here are the instructions to enumerators for the 1841 census:

“Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age is.

Thus—for Persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15

20 years and under 25 write 20, and so on.

If no more can be ascertained respecting the age of any person than that the person is a child or is grown up, write “under 20,” or “above 20,” as the case may be”.

The problem you face is that not all parishes in Ireland have records for the early 1800s and of those that do, not all are on-line.  Without knowing where in Ireland they came from and what denomination they were, it’s a bit of a needle in a haystack.

How certain are you that Catherine’s maiden name was Glen? I ask because I see a couple of RC baptisms that might fit the family. Rebecca born Glasgow 11.11.1833 to James Murray & Catherine Dougherty, and Thomas born 10.12.1837 to same parents.

Have you found the family in the 1851 or any later censuses? I can see a tree on Ancestry showing Rebecca died in Australia. When did she arrive in Australia?
