The death certificate of one of my 3rd great grandfather's, George Underwood Alley (b. Dublin, 1804; d. Araluen, NSW, 1879) records that his parents were John Alley & Jane Ann Underwood. A distant Alley cousin sent me:
• a transcript of John Alley & Jane Ann Underwood's marriage of 28 February 1804, which indicates that John Alley of Bishop St, Dublin, was a gunmaker; and
• a memorial deed dated 27 February 1804 in which Jane Ann Underwood's father Richard Underwood agrees to pay an annual sum to John Alley & Jane Ann Underwood upon their marriage.
I cannot find any other primary source records which relate to Jane Ann Underwood, her father Richard Underwood, or her mother. The Irish records I have found from around that era indicate there were a number Richard Underwoods in Dublin and so it would be easy to get them mixed up.
There are several family trees on Ancestry which say that Jane Ann Underwood's parents were Richard Underwood MP (1730-79) & Christiana Goold (b. 1732), that Jane was born in 1764 (though Family Search says 1783) and lived until she was 110 years old (which seems highly unlikely). While the memorial deed of 27 February 1804 indicates that Jane Ann Underwood's father was indeed a Richard Underwood, he could not have been the Richard Underwood MP (1730-79), who was married to Christiana Goold, as he was very much alive on 27 February 1804 when he was a party to the memorial deed. It is also significant that records on Irish Genealogy indicate that all of Richard Underwood's & Christiana Goold's children were baptised in St Mary's Parish, Dublin, whereas Jane Ann Underwood (on her marriage inscription) was in St Bridgit's Parish, Dublin (St Bridgit's records have been lost entirely).
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any further information about the birth and death of Jane Ann Underwood and birth, marriage and death of her father Richard and whether there were any other siblings.
