Hi,

I have no proof, but have been told my great great grandmother Jane Nowlan was born in MITCHELSTOWN about 1835 to John Nowlan. Her father was a farmer.Grandma said they had alot of land (not sure if true). The family fell on hard times. She came to South Australia due to the potato famine.Listed as being a servant. The ship she was on was called South Sea (arrival 30 july 1855).

Her husband Thomas Stewart/steward was a sailor, whom she married in S.Aust.She meet him in Ireland during a stopover. She has also been listed as Nolan and Norland.

Shipping records show her as from KILKENNY?

I Know it's a long shot but I thought it possible that there may be records of her and the shipping records are wrong.

If it helps she was catholic as her husband converted.

One child was Thomas Henry Stewart born 1859 Who married Mary Bridget Crocker(My great grandparents).

The other children may have been Mary Ann,James,William john,Sydney James Can't be sure as have only Thomas birth record.

I think she possibly had a sister margaret and a brother John.

Also on the ship South sea where listed Patrick Nowlan(born about 1833) and hetty sometimes listed as kitty kelly. However they were listed as being from CARLOW.So probably not related.

I realise I don't have much information.

The sites I have used are:

theshiplist.com/ships/passengerlist/index.htm,

genealogysa.org.au/ (bdm in south Aust.)

FamilyhistorySa.Info/( I looked under deserters)

trove.nla.gov.au.newspapers(newspaper articles)

Thankyou Alison
