My great, great, great grandmother Bridget Ryan was the second child of Jane (O'Brien) and John Ryan of Cappamore, Parish of Doon, County Limerick. She was born on March 20, 1839. She emigrated to the United States in 1854 (approximate). She first lived in New York, then Wisconsin and finally Goodhue County, Minnesota.

I would like to learn more about my ancestors in Ireland and where Bridget came from.  Her family was Roman Catholic.

My mother, sister and I are travelling to Ireland in late February 2013 and would like to visit the community of our ancestors and learn more about them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Jennifer Erickson

  • I have a lot of information about these folks and their relatives. Too many notes to post here.   My folks also came from Cappamore and settled in Goodhue County too.  Jane's sister married my gggrandfather's brother  The O'Brien's house still stands, across the lane from where our folks lived. It's a good thing you know where they come from or it would be hard to trace them.  The Griffith's Valuation index at http://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ shows that there were 44 John Ryan's in just the parish of Doon in 1850.  Family information may help you narrow it down to the right one.  You can email me at AnnL7777  (at) aol.com and we will compare notes.  Jane was from Clonteen which you can see on the map, across the road from Bilboa with which it is sometimes confused or conflated.  Cloonteen townland  was originally in Doon and is now in Cappamore parish.  Our Cloonteen family were baptized and married in Cappamore church, not Doon.

  • Hi Ann,

You certainly seem to have lots of information on the O'Brien clan from Cappamore.

My relative Richard Costello was baptised on Sep 10 1893 in Doon Church, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Michael Buckley & Allicia O'Brien were Richard's godparents.

Richard's mother Anne ( Mary) Sheehy was born in Shanacloon, Cappamore, Co. Limerick, Ireland abt 1851.

Richard later married Johanna O'Brien abt 1923 in Nenagh, Ireland.

Wondering what the O'Brien connection is to this Costello/ Sheehy family line?

    Any insights would be appreciated!
