Was looking on line for information about Jeremiah and found information on the Irish convict Darby McEvoy which seems to be his other name and the one on his marriage certificate to Margaret Keefe in Bathurst NSW. He came out in 1835 on Lady McMaughton after being tried in Wexford on 6/3/1835.  The convict record says he was born in 1809 in County Wicklow yet his marriage and death records suggest 1816. Does any one have any more information about this relative? His death cert says parents unknown.

  • You would usually need a little more detail to start a proper search of Irish records - e.g. parents names or a more detailed location, e.g. town or parish, you generally require these details to verify, or rule out, any potential matches found.

The difficulty with a search for someone born this early is that there are quite a few parishes that do not have records going back early enough, so it's quite likely there's no written record of a baptism for your Jeremiah. The average starting date for good record keeping in Catholic parishes in rural Ireland is about 1830. Having parents names, or even details of some siblings can help, especially younger siblings as you can then search for their records instead to establish the parish.

Was your Darby McEvoy Roman Catholic ?

I located a very brief mention of the trial of Darby/Jeremiah in the Belfast Newsletter of the 17th March 1835 - "..At Wexford Assizes, Darby McEvoy was sentenced to 7 years transportation for perjury before Baron Foster at the previous Assizes..". As far as I know the Assize Court took place a couple of times a year at this time, and for County Wexford these took place  in Wexford town. The Assize Judges were scheduled to hear cases at different courts around the country, so it's possible that the 'Previous Assizes' referred to did not take place in Wexford. There are several mentions in Newspapers of cases heard before this Judge Baron Foster, but did not spot any other mentions of a Darby McEvoy - the defendants are not always named in these newspaper articles..
