Hello- I am looking for the family of my third great grandfather, Jeremiah “Jerry” Ford. He was born in 1825 in County Cork, part of county unknown. Sometime before 1855 he arrived in America, and ended up in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. On his death certificate in Toledo, in 1909, his parents are listed as John Ford and Mary Driscoll. Jerry married Abbie Fallon before 1856 in presumably Ohio, but I have as yet been unable to find that particular document. I currently have all documentation for his death, address history, work history, churches attended, all of his Childrens births, deaths, and their families and children coming forward.

I am trying to work backward to find where exactly he is from in County Cork, and to prove his family going back. I have searched on every Irish genealogy site I can find, and have come up empty. I have been using the search for his parents, but either Mary did not give her last name in documents, or John and Mary went by other names besides their first names, or Mary was possibly married once before John? I have no clue, but every time I have searched using the names Ford or Forde and Driscoll I get zero results in the right time frame. What I do know is that Jeremiah had two brothers most likely, and their names were Cornelius, and William. I have been in touch with Williams descendants and they are at the same brick wall as I am. There has also been a proven DNA connection between our families. William and Cornelius are definitely brothers. As an interesting aside, all three men named their first born sons Daniel, which leads me to believe that Jeremiah had a paternal Grandpa named Daniel if you follow the Irish naming pattern from that time period.

Can anyone help? I would dearly love to move back beyond Jeremiah and where and who in County Cork, Ireland I should be searching and find out more about my Irish family. I have always felt a deep connection to this part of my heritage and it is killing me to have worked on this so long and just keep coming up with no answers. Oh, and as an added pain in the butt, if you do any search for Ford, County Cork on general searches, all you get is the family of Henry Ford, of Ford Motor Co, to whom we are not related to my knowledge.

Please help? I would be ecstatic to learn anything new about this family and where to continue my search.

Thank you so much, Jacki in Ohio, USA

  • Hi Jackie,
Can you give me a rough time frame for when they left Ireland or an approximate year of birth.

  • Hi Jackie,

sorry to say I have checked all references to Jeremiah but have failed to locate anybody that would fit into your  timeframe. I will continue to look but as I have already spent considerable time researching, I do not hold out much hope of finding him. I have searched throughout County Cork in available resources and failed. I wish you the very best in your research and if there is anything I can do to help with any other query, I would be happy to do so.

Frank, thank you so much for your hard work. I’m sorry I didn’t see your reply sooner. We are moving into a new home and have been packing and I hadn’t gotten a chance to check this recently.

Best of my knowledge, Jeremiah was born in 1825. William born 1830/31 and Cornelius born 1833. They all came over to Ohio. All three named their first born son Daniel. Like I said, I can find plenty of John Ford or Forde’s but none with a Mary Driscoll. I had found one likely set of parents, right time frame and right mothers name but not a mention of Driscoll.

I am open to any ideas or suggestions that you may have, and I am very thankful for your assistance. I recently sent in my DNA to Ancestry and if it takes 6-8 weeks to hear back, I will know something in January. Hopefully that will give me more leads. I would dearly love it if you could bear with me until then when I can give you more leads.

    Again, a million thanks! Jacki
