I'm new to this site. I have two main Irish family lines. Brangan (possibly from Bandon) and Herlihy. Today, I'm inquiring about Herlihy. My 2xGreat Grandfather, John Herlihy (b. 1826 d. 1897) came to the USA around 1850, his Naturalization document saying Garryadeen.

John's marriage index in Massachussets says Jeremiah was his father's name. His Death index says his parent's names were Jeremiah Herlihy & Elizabeth Callahan. My assumptions are their first child born around 1820, so Jeremiah and Elizabeth were born around 1800.

Up until now, all of my factual Family Tree records from this line have been in America. Irish records have been hypothetical and theories with a couple AncestryDNA and MyHeritage DNA matches.

Recently, I made contact with a DNA match who provided me names in her Family Tree. Her 2xGreat Grandmother was a Julia Herlihy (b. 1820 d. 1902), married Cornelius Mullane, and says she had a sister, Catherine Herlihy, (d. 1898) came to America, married Stephen Ryan of Nova Scotia. My DNA match then said Julia's parents were Jeremia Herlihy and Elizabeth Callaghan.

The closest I've come with Irish records is a Betsy Coleman, but I feel this is not a correct pairing for my ancestors.

My match also said Julia and Catherine had a brother, Timothy, and at one time, I had a hypothetical parent to Jeremiah from a records that showed Tmy Herlehy (I think), but removed it. Every family seems to have a Timothy, Catherine, Mary, Julia, John or William and with the Irish naming pattern, it gets very diluted and leads to uncertainty.

John's children were Elizabeth (Lizzie), Bridget (wife's mother's name), John, Mary, Jane, Catherine, Cecilia (Fred Allen's mother) and Joseph (my Great Grandfather). I'm guessing there is some Irish naming going on here with Elizabeht, Bridget, John and Catherine, if it was a name of a sister. I do also believe my 2xgreat grandmother (Julia Murphy) had a sister, Catherine, so definitely a family name.

Any help with locating parish records or a Jeremiah Herlihy married to Elizabeth Callaghan with children John, Catherine, Julia, Timothy, a possible father with the name Jeremiah or Timothy around Innascara or Garryadeen or surrounding parishes in Cork.

Thank you

Daniel

  • Thank you, Patricia. I have been exploring Roots Ireland and was able to locate the Julia Herlihy baptism already, but the Denis one is new. Julia Mullane actually named her youngest Denis.

It looks like my John Herlihy had two older siblings. A follow up question would be about the sponsors. Are these like God Parents? Would they be the child's Aunt or Uncle or grandparents? So Timothy and Mary Herlihy would be Jeremiah's.... who? Brother and sister? Brother and his wife?  Looks like I have a starting point to go when I visit Ireland.

  • The sponsors are the same as godparents. They were often the siblings of the baby's parents. When I'm doing genealogy research, I always research the godparents; it often leads to a family connection.

  • Patricia, the Denis Herlihy record looks as if the wife's name is written as Bet Colem, not Elizabeth Callaghan. Now it is possible she went by Betty and the "Colem" is just an unclear Callahan/Callaghan? I would agree with you that it probably is, since the location of both Baptisms were in the same town. But this leads me to wonder about another church record I stumbled upon in the past. Unfortunately, there is just the text from a record, no image of the actual record.

    Area - CORK & ROSS (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - DOUGLAS

Marriage of JERH HIERLIHY of KILMURREHEEN and BETTY COLEMAN of KILMURREHEEN on 7 October 1819

    Husband  JERH HIERLIHY

    Wife  BETTY COLEMAN

    Address KILMURREHEEN

Is it possible this record is my Jeremiah and Elizabeth's marriage record and the transcription is simply getting Elizabeth's name wrong? The location is more East. I'm not familiar with family situations in the early 1800s about how mobile they were to find work or food.
