My ancestor Jeremiah Regan, born circa 1808 in County Cork. Father's name unknown. Mother's first name was Mary. Wife's name was Honora. They left Ireland for England just before England's 1851 census. At the time there was a 5 month old baby daughter born in Ireland. Other children were Patrick and James and John. All born in Ireland. John was born 1828-1830. The family eventually settled in Ware, England. My father emigrated to Canada after WW2.
Any information on this family would be appreciated. I did Ancestry DNA but found no links.

Do you know Mary's surname ?
Can you post the names and est. years of birth for the children ... were any of their children born in England, or after mid-1837 ?

SaI can't find Jeremiah on the 1861 census in England. Only the 1851 census where there is a 5 month old daughter born in Ireland. So they must have come over circa 1850. All I could find were born in Ireland. Mary's last name was Regan. I am descended through Jeremiah's son John to his son Patrick to his son William my grandfather. The only Jeremiah Regan born in Cork with a mother named Mary has a father named Andrew. I am not positive this is the father but it is the only Jeremiah Regan with a mother, Mary, born in Cork Does any of this fit in with your research? Have you done your DNA ? Sandra Regan McDevitt

According to that 1861 census the family were living in Stepney registration district, a check for births of a Jeremiah Regan in around 1852 shows just one match in that district - a Jeremiah Ragan registered J (June) Quarter 1851, mother's maiden surname Donovan, might be worth checking out to see if that's the correct birth.. References are are 1851/J, STEPNEY, Volume 2, Page 542.
I had a look for possible Regan/Donovan Catholic baptisms in Ireland but found no matches - possibly any earlier children were baptised in a parish which does not have good records available for the timeframe...

Just messaged a cousin's wife in England. Apparently the only facts that are certain is that they were in the 1851 England census. They lived at Stars Court. There are two children listed, Dennis age 7 and Mary age 5.All born in Ireland. There is a son John born in Ireland circa 1832. He is listed as being married to a Mary Regan. On his marriage certificate his parents are Jeremiah and Hanora. His address was Stars Court. I am descended through John. My cousin's wife can't follow the Jeremiah and Hanora family with any certainty after that because there are too many Jeremiah and Hanora Regan families in the same area. We can follow John but not his father. Think I may have been following the wrong family. If you can be of any help it would be wonderful. Where do you live? I live in the US. Born in Canada but live here now.

You really need Hanora's surname to progress, that's why I was focusing on any children born in England...
As you have seen the names are quite common even in England, so would be even more common in Ireland, especially around the south west where Regan is most prevalent. In addition given the early dates the availability of records will be a factor - the average starting date for Cathic records in rural areas was about 1830 and some parish records start even later, so locating and confirming baptisms for Jeremiah or Hanora with any degree of certainty is a problem.
If Hanora's surname could be located, e.g. via birth or baptism of later children in England, then you could search for earlier births and baptisms in England or Ireland and possibly at least establish a parish in Ireland for the children which would likely be where the couple originated.
A quick search or the available Catholic records for a possible baptism for a Denis Regan (a slightly less common first-name) in Ireland 1844 +-5 years with father Jeremiah or similar shows about 2 results, both in Co. Cork parishes in 1839 and 1849, however neither is a good match as parents are Jeremiah and Margaret and Jeremiah and Mary. It's possible that the entry for his baptism is there somewhere but faded or difficult to read, but checking the individual registers in detail would be next to impossible as Co. Cork is the largest county in Ireland with something like 100 Catholic parishes...
A search for the far more common name John Regan c1832 with father Jeremiah finds about 13 matches, again all in Co. Cork parishes, one of the mother's on these is difficult to read, but looks could possibly be an abbreviation for Johanna, surname looks like Taylor ? Might be worth considering.....
The record is of a John Regan baptised on the 5th May 1830, father Jerh., the parish is Bandon RC, which was based in the town of the same name... this is a link to the register page with this baptism (see left page abt half way down), and I've also attached an image extract of the baptism in question..

Mary Regan's mother's name was Catherine Locke. Found her listed as mother in law on a census. Does that help?

I think Honorah's maiden name was Locke. A Catherine Locke was listed as mother in law on a census.

John Regan was born Skibereen, Cork, March 1830. Father listed as Jeremiah Regan and Mother Joanna Taylor . All in Latin. I was told that Joanna translates to Honora. Which fits the census in England if this is true. I
don't know the parish name but Jeremiah's name is crossed out for some reason. The second line looks like the words The Boyla ? Then name Joh with an a in the air. Joanna? Then Regan.
Can someone help with this? Name of parish and what second line means.
On the English census Catherine Lock is listed as mother in law so I thought Hanora's maiden name was Lock. So that is a bit of a puzzle.
I found Skibereen on the marriage certificate of John and Mary Regan married at the Sardinian Chapel in London 1852. It states they were from Skibereen, Cork. Father listed as Jeremiah Regan and mother as Hanora Regan. Star Street was listed as their residence which fits with the census.
John's son, James Patrick, is my great grandfather so it all fits.Cantwell-Rice

If Jeremiah and Hanora were from Skibereen could the baptism have been in Bandon? Or is Bandon the diocese? And the baptism in Skibereen. Not that close back then. I think 50 kms. 30 miles. Are there census records from 1830 in Ireland? Is it possible to find where he was living in 1830?
I think I have the correct person if Joanna translates to Honora. Thanks for any help. Trying to trace my family from England back to Ireland had been quite frustrating.Cantwell-Rice
