  • Hello Ann Marie,

I found a 15 July 1818 Newcastle, Tipperary Catholic baptism record for a "Johana Kelehan," whose parents were Thomas Kelehan and Margaret Corbit. I didn't uncover the baptisms for any of Johanna's siblings, but did locate the marriage record for the couple who may be Johanna's parents, but who married in the Newcastle Catholic parish in 1825, 7 years after Johanna was baptized. In the marriage record Thomas's last name is spelled, "Cunehan." Margaret's maiden name is spelled, "Corbet."

If you think the baptism record and marriage record pertain to the ancestors your are looking for, please reply and I'll send you copies of the original records as attachments.

    With Best Wishes,

  • Thank you, Dave, for your searching!

The 1818 baptism of Johana Kelehan in Newcastle COULD be my g-g-grandmother.  Not sure she had siblings.  I do not know much about that family line going back that far.  I have a record of her marriage in 1843 to James Leahy. (Jacobi in Latin church record).  They lived in Rossmore/Newcastle.  Have seen the church and the land.......

Since folks did not move too far at that time, I wonder if both the Leahy and Keleher families were close to that town/church for a few generations.

Have been working with the geography of the area and trying to figure out how people met people in those times in Ireland.......how far would they walk to meet people?

    Thanks again- all my best,

    Ann Marie Bridget Lynch

  • Hi Ann Marie,

I can think of three ways people met in Ireland back in the 1800s.

One way they could have met is if they were neighbors.

The other way was in church.

The third way was at the local fairs.

According to the 1837 edition of Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, fairs were held near Newcastle across the River Suir in the parish of Mullogh. See the entry for Newcastle, Tipperary in Lewis's Topographical Dictionary at: https://www.libraryireland.com/topog/N/Newcastle-Offa-West-Tipperary.php

Thank you for writing back Ann Marie,

    Dave

  • Good morning from New York, Dave!

Thanks for the information and the resource.  Have time during this pandemic to check out everything!

On a visit to Tipperary in 2016, we saw the RC Church in Newcastle (Our Lady of the Assumption?) in the middle of a town.  Johanna Keleher married James Leahy there in 1843........their homeland was Rossmore- up the hill from the town.

I wonder how their daughter, Norah,  met and made plans to marry in New York  (Which they did in 1898)  with John J Powers (possibly from Ballykerogue Little or Big, County Waterford).  Seems they might have met some place in between?  Heard about Four-mile-water from another volunteer, Tom.  Have a kindle book about that area- but am stuck in teh historic details of wars.  Not too many family names (except Prendergast) so far........Think there is an old church there that might have some connection to the Powers family.........and have to explore it more.    John's parents were Bridget Kane and Patrick Powers.  Wish I had a dime for every couple named Bridget and Patrick Powers!  Seems to be quite common.......as was their daughter, Anastasia. (a name I thought was Russian)!

Anyway- thank you again!  Hope all is well in your world!

    My best,

    Ann Marie
