I am seeking information on  the parents and grand parents of John and Mary Nowlan/Nolan who  were twins born c.1859. Exact place of births not known, I believe their roots were in the Nowlan/Nolan's of Kilglass, Ahascragh. John  Jnr. married a Marguerite Keane in Ahascragh in 1889 and they had 7 children-Annie, John Michael,Edward, Mary,Michael Joseph, Bridget Agnes and Thomas Kevin. In 1911 they were living in 63 Ahascragh Town.I believe John was a farmer and shopkeeper( possibly butcher). Mary did not marry and lived in Kilglass.

Any information in relation to these (half siblings of my father) would be much appreciated and would assist in filling in some blanks in the family tree.

Many thanks, Gerald Nolan

  • Hi Gerald,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Ahascragh (Elphin). These date from 1840 for baptismal records and 1866 for marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4616, 4617. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance. You could also check the Church of Latter Day Saints, film 09899751 or online.

You might find this link of interest: http://www.mylocalnews.ie/articles/359/4/st-cuam-s-ahascragh-814/ahascragh-parish-news-26448/

Did you check the 1901/1911 census records for information? You can find it here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I was looking for images of Ahascragh and I happened to come across this: http://www.oldirishimages.com/towns%20and%20villages/co%20galway/ahascragh/ahascragh.shtml You might be able to find the shop listed in some of the old trade directories.

This is another useful website for you to check: http://www.from-ireland.net/county/galway and this link for Galway County Library: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/culturenet/archives/galway/galway-county-library-loc/

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Siead, Many thanks for your reply. We have all the info on the twins apart from the exact date and place of birth in Co.Galway and their mothers name. It was not in Ahascragh from our reserch there. The mother may have returned to her home place. She seems to have died at the time of the births since her husband was a widower at the time of his second marriage .I was talking to Paula about this and she is making further enquiries.

    Thanks again, Gerald Nolan
