Have come to a brick wall with looking into my Irish roots, trying to trace the Bent family line John Bent was born in August 1809 in New Ross, Wexford, to Mary Mylnund and James Bent, don't know if anyone can help?

The subscription site Roots Ireland has New Ross RC records back to 1789. I searched for a John Bent baptismal record with father James but the earliest record available was in the 1830s.

Likely your John was baptized in a different parish that no longer has records back to 1808.

  • GedxGray:

I forgot to add that if the Bents were Church of Ireland, records for that parish are held at the Representative Church Library in Dublin.

  • If you are stuck with no clues - suggest that your Bent's were not original Irish and could be English. My 2xgrandfather was a William Bent whose daughter married my g-grandfather John Beatty a blacksmith in the parish of St John Sligo ie Church of Ireland whose records only go back to c1808. However, my William was a soldier and the only fit for him is for a Cpl William Bent of the 41st Regt. of Foot that defended Ontario (now Canada) in the War of 1812 when the USA invaded. Report says this regiment did time in Ireland post Napoleonic War. William was born in Sutton in Ashfield c1780's and was recruited in Plymouth 1811 in to be shipped to Canada for the 1812 War. He retired at Chatham Kent and Died, buried in Marsden Nottingham England 1865. There was a multitude of incomers in the Wexford area known as 'the Laggin' many of Norman origin so that may be another coarse to pursue? I would also recommend being a male to SNP DNA test to find if you relate to Haplogroup R-M269 of that area from where my Haplogroup R-A476/A6308 is a downstream descent.
