My Great Great Grandfather John Callanan was born around 1839 in the vicinity of Cork city in County Cork. His father was Michael Callana (farmer of County Cork) and Mary Callana(Casey) also of County Cork.

He was a marine stoker and arrived in Australia in approximately 1868 and family lore has it that he came overland to Melbourne.

I have no further details of his forbears except names and would love to find more before travelling to Irelnd mid September and planning to travel to places where my ancestors came from so any information would be gratefully recieved.

Thank you

Maggie

  • I located a baptism of a probable brother to your John, a Thomas Callanan with parents MIchael Callanan and Mary Casey baptised in Blackrock RC Parish Co. Cork on the 25th April 1848- see towards the end of this page in the register  This parish is located adjacent to Cork city. I didn't see any promising matches for a baptism for John, but probably worth a closer look through the registers to see if there's any sign. I noted that there seems to be a few gaps in the baptism records for this parish - e.g. between October 1847 and January 1848, August 1839 to January 1841 etc..

  • Found a probable baptism for your John in the adjacent 'South Parish, Cork' dated 19th December 1837 under the variant Culnane - see the entry on IrishGenealogy

Also the marriage of Michael & Mary in another nearby parish, Ballygarvan (Douglas and Ballygarvan) on the 7th July 1832 - see this page in the register (just above the July, on the left page). Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish, so possibly Mary was born in the Ballygarvan area.

  • Thank you so much Shane. I thought there could have been a name variation of Callahan. It is also great to have found a brother too.

I will look further into these records

  • Shane it is definitely our John's baptism as we have a sister perhaps born later Anastasia who married Cornelius Scannell and came to Australia as well. So I surmise that the Scannell family was known to the Culnane /Callanan family.

    WOW!!

  • OOPs, Anastasia Callanan married Michael Scannell so she was Michael Callanans sister. Cornelius was a son
