Hi

Am looking for information on one of the many many John Darmodys in my family. He died in 1985 and set up World Aid and who was son to Kathleen Darmody. We don't know much about her at all.

His cousin (we think) was also called Kathleen Darmody and that was my grandmother - but having some challenges linking that on the family tree.

They all lived in Silver street, Nenagh

I have found two birth records on rootsireland but because they're after 1920, I can't see who the mother is listed to see if it's Kathleen Darmody and therefore the correct John Darmody. We're unaware who the father was.

I'd also love to read any information on them above and beyond birth certificates - have found the odd article on the Nenagh World Aid in local news but not much else.

If anyone has any info, would be interested to know!
Thank you

  • Hi Jane,

The 1901 census of Ireland has a John Darmody, Master Tailor, residing in Shamrock Place, Nenagh with his wife Kate and son James and daughter Agnes. John is shown to be 62 years of age and Kate 50 years.

A John Darmody, address Nenagh, married a Margaret Collins in Silvermines R.C. Church on April 26th 1897. In the civil record he is described as a Tailor. His father is John Darmody, Tailor. Margaret Collins, address Silvermines. Father is described as a Labourer. Witnesses: Martin Clifford and Bridget Joyce.

A John Darmody ws born in Nenagh, address: Abbey Lane on October 23rd 1898 and baptised in Nenagh on November 7th 1898. His father is recorded as John Darmody, Tailor and his mother as Margaret Collins. Baptismal sponsor: Bridget Boney.

The 1911 census of Ireland has a record of a John Darmody, Master Tailor, age 44 years in Silver Street, Nenagh. His wife is recorded as Margaret and is 34 years of age. Children: John 14 years, Bridget 12, Margaret 9, Kathleen 4 and James 2. The record states that they were married 15 years and had 7 children, 5 who are still living. This "John" Junior would appear to be the same as the John Darmody who was involved in the founding of the Nenagh World Aid Society?

There are many short articles in the Nenagh Guardian Newspaper in relation to this John Darmody. Apparently he died at Shamrock Court, Nenagh on April, 24th 1985. There are group photos in the Nenagh Guardian on September 24th 1983, page 6, March 2nd 1985, page 14 and May 4th 1985, page 14 - John Darmody RIP.

A Tribute by the Councillors of Nenagh Urban Council is carried in Nenagh Guardian on May 4th1985.

    Regards,

  • Hi Jane,

John Darmody of Nenagh World Aid, I found an article in the Nenagh Guardian dated January 13th 1996 by reporter Gerry Slevin on the founding of the Society. It was formed in the Ormonde hotel, Nenagh and the article is headed:

Nenagh's Contribution to Poverty Awareness - Thirty years of dedicated Service.

It appears this John Darmody was born in 1924. I have sought confirmation of this, but due to the Covid-19 virus offices are not operating on a full time basis. I have been promised a report in a few days!

  • Jane,

I have shared your post and hopefully someone who knew John and his family will respond. In the event that you do not get a response I suggest that you write a letter to the editor of the Nenagh Guardian which should be published.

  • Apologies for the delay in responding, and thank you all for your help! Will go through this information now.

McCoy - i think the John Darmodys you've found are another part of the family, as I have a photo of my grandmother standing next to their gravestones  (with Agnes Wildenfield) when we took her back to Nenagh 10 or so years ago. And I couldn't work out who they are, so this will help greatly!

    Thank you

  • Hi McCoy

    What you found here:

It appears this John Darmody was born in 1924. I have sought confirmation of this, but due to the Covid-19 virus offices are not operating on a full time basis. I have been promised a report in a few days!

Tallies up with what we thought as he'd have been a few years older than my grandmother (who was born in 1930), but am unable to view a birth certficate.

    Thank you both

  • Hi McCoy + Margaret

Thank you again for your continued help with this, and apologies again for the delay. I don't always get a notification.

I'm particulary interested in this section - i don't suppose it had a father listed?

State record for a "John Darmody" born February 9th 1924 in Nenagh. His mother is recorded as Kathleen Darmody of Sylver Street, Nenagh. Based on press reports, this man would appear to be the same as the "John Darmody" who as involved in the founding of the Nenagh World Aid Sopciety?

The newspaper articles, is there way of getting hold of these? Is paying for  Irish News archive the best way?

    Thank you again!
