Farrell is possibly the most common surname in Longford and John was also popular. For Longford, Co Longford, the following 3 appear on record for 1848.
-
John Farrell baptized on 12-Jan-1848 in the RC parish of LONGFORD. Parents: Patrick Farrell & Catherine Nolan (Godparents: John Boylan & Margaret Halligan).
-
John Farrell baptized on 23-Feb-1848 in the RC parish of LONGFORD. Parents: Michael Farrell & Mary Kenny (Godparents: Patrick MacDonald & Brigid MacAuley).
-
John Farrell baptized on 04-May-1848 in the RC parish of LONGFORD. Parents: John Farrell & Margaret Edgeworth (Godparents: John Farrell & Maria Kenny).
If young Robert was named for his grandfather... A Robert Ferrall & Mary Mulligan were the only couple baptising children in Longford town (and this was up to 1805 only). No records for a John born to a Robert Farrell appear anywhere in Co Longford.
However, circa 1848 a Robert Farrell appears on record as a godparent and witness to a number of marriages in this town. For example, John Farrell who married Anne Clynch in 1849.
What other clues do you have in the 1851 Longford Census?

Gerry,
You probably need to spend a little money researching the Scottish end of your family further to get the information you need to locate them in Ireland. For example, I can see what looks like John & Mary’s marriage in St Peter parish Dundee in 1872. Scottish marriage certificates normally contain both parents names, their occupations and whether they were alive or dead on the date of marriage. You can view that marriage on Scotlandspeople for about £1.60 (sterling).
I think I can see daughter Mary’s birth on January 18th 1880 and the family in the 1881 census for Dundee. The family looks to have been at 44 Great George St, John 33 (coal shed labourer), Mary 32, Ann 5 & Mary 1. If you want the other childrens details you should be able to get them from either subsequent censuses or from a search of the birth records for that area. But the key one for us is the parents marriage as that should give information on their parents.
