John Francis Ryan (mymaternal Great Grandfather) born in Castletowneroche about 1841-1842. I have found records of both dates. One in the family bible (4/17/1843) the other in his Batism record (4/22/1842. He immigrated to the United Staes where he served in the Civil War. I have his service records. He died 12/14/1896 and buried in Luthern Cemetary, now known as All Faiths Cemetary, 67-29 Metropolitan Ave, Middle Village, NY 11379. I went to the cemetary and was given the information of his burial site. He had no headstone. I posted his records on this site.

I don't know where the family moved to or if they stayed in Castletowneroche, when he came to the USA oe even if they came with him. Does anyone have any info on him.

  • Caroline,

His death record states he was in the US for 36 years, so he emigrated around 1860. There are a couple of records on Ancestry for a John Ryan emigrating at 18 years old from Ireland, but cannot know which one is his. His brother William (22 Apr 1846) has three petty session records between 1885-1890, so he most likely didn't emigrate to the US. My "best guess" is that his parents Mary (Higgins) & Edward (Edmond as seen on William's birth record) Ryan remained in Castletownroche, Cork. There is an Ancestry record for their marriage on 6 Oct 1839, Mallow, Ireland. Perhaps you already have all of this information as I noticed you have an Ancestry tree as well.

  • Hi Caroline,

I don't know if the following information interests you or if you have it already.

John Ryan son of Edmond Ryan & Mary Higgins was baptised in Castletownroche       22 Apr1842.         Sponsors were, Johanna & John Troy.             Officiating Priest. John Fitzpatrick

Edmond Ryan son of Edmond Ryan & Mary Higgins was baptised in Castletownroche 22 Sep1844          Sponsors were, John Higgins & Mary Higgins  Officiating Priest John Fitzpatrick

William Roche son of Edmond Ryan & Mary Higgins was baptised in Castletownroche 22 Aor 1846          Sponsors were, John Higgins & Mary Higgins   Officiating Priest  John Fitzpatrick

It seems rather peculiar that all three Baptisms took place on 22nd of the month in each case and on the exact same date four years after the first child but it may have been traditional in the family or in the Church that 22nd of the month was a designated Baptism Date.

I cannot see any other references to the family over e ten year period before and after 1842 but if you feel there is anything else I can help with, please let me know preferably through my personal email address as it is much quicker and more certain to be seen by me that way. frankfahy054@gmail.com   Meanwhile I may have a look twenty to thirty years later in the cases of Edmond and William to see if there is any record of a marriage for either.

    Hope this helps..

  • I think that might be the info I had posted before, as I was trying to update John's info and it added as a new person instead as I did something wrong. He is my Great grandfather who married Martha Ogden in New York State after he had been in the American Civil War. I also have all his military papers. I can't find his immigration date or ship he was on. I don't know if he came alone or with his family. He was about 21-22 when he enlisted. Thank you for responding.
