Hello, some questions re John Herlihy:

John Hirlihy married Anne Sheehy 18 February at Nantenan, Rathkeale, Limerick

John is aged 25, a Bootmaker living in Ballyhomuck. Anne is from Kilbeha, a Servant.

They had eight children from 1871 through 1883 when Anne died at Rathkeale Workhouse but was living at Nantenan, wife of a Shoemaker.

John Herlihy married Hanora Ahern 07 March 1885 Cappagh, Rathkeale, Limerick

John is an Artisan, of full age, a Widower, living at Gragues. Anne is from Kilbeha, a Servant.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1885/10864/5967065.pdf

First child born was Hannie Herlihy found on civil records with birth date 05 December 1885 at a location named Gragues. John is a Shoemaker, mother Hanora Ahern.

Second child born was Hanora Herlihy found on civil records with birth date 15 April 1885 at a location named Gragues. John is a Shoemaker.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1887/02555/1945277.pdf

They had seven children in total (that I can find) from 1885 through 1900.

On the 1901 census data, John can be found with his second family but not one child from the first marriage. The youngest surviving child would have been 20 years old so this is probably not unusual.

Hannie (Hanna), aged  16, can be found at the house of George M Hunt, possibly the owner of Kilbeha House. Her sister Hanora, aged 14, can be found with her parents and family in Curraheen North, Nantinan. Hannie can then be found on a ship to New York in 1902 with her sponsor being Kate (probably Catherine her older half-sister, from John’s first marriage).

Questions:

  1. I can find Kilbeha on Google and maps but not Gragues. Is this the name of a house or farm as I can’t find it on Google maps? It seems there is an estate named Kilbeha House near Kilbehy, perhaps one in the same? There must be a link between these two locations as both John's wives were Servants from Kilbeha.
  2. On the marriage record in 1885, John is an Artisan not a Shoemaker yet for the subsequent births of children he was Shoemaker – why the different title?
  3. Hannie born 1885 then Hanora born 1887 – these names are direct from the civil birth records but the names seem very similar to me. I have not come across the name Hannie on an official record before. Are they derived from the same name, such as Johanna (John’s mother’s name)?
  4. John Herlihy’s parents were Cornelius (1800-1870) and Johanna Hurley(?-?). I found the death record for Cornelius on Irish Civil records (index only) but cannot find a death record for his wife Johanna with any certainty. This record, which fits the location and age group, is from Rathkeale Workhouse but provides no clues as to family – could someone please decipher the location where she was living, from column number 3 on this record….. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1884/06331/4815631.pdf

  • Hi Alan,

My grandfather was born, and grew up on a farm in the Townland of Feeagh or Feebeg in the Civil Parish of Nantinan, and was Baptised in Nantenan RC Church. It is more than likely his family wore 'Sunday' shoes and hobnailed boots with gaiters for the mucky conditions farming. An Artisan on the certificate would have denoted a self-employed skilled tradesman. It is unusual to get the family pet name of a person named Hanora entered as Hannie in an official document. It is also commonly the diminutive of Johanna.

I have been in Kilbeha House, and the nearby Oratory situated on the grounds. The location is in a beautiful woodland setting which is very near Castlehewson, and both the house and the shrine are very well maintained by the current owners, the Hawkes family.

I live over 20 miles from Nantenan and therefore I am not familiar enough with the surnames of local residents to know if Herlihys still live there.

The death cert for Anne gives her age as 40, but if she got married at 20 she should have been 32. Maybe it is just a mistake and this is the correct person.

Graigues is a Townland in the Civil Parish of Nantenan and I could find no Herlihy there in the 1901 Census.

  • Hi John,

Thanks very much for your detailed reply and for locating Graigues which I had not found. John Herlihy died in Rathkeale in 1912, some of his children moved to Newcastle West and  some to the USA. One daughter, Ellen, married a John Loughnane and records show she died in Kilbeha in 1971, so there were a few generations in this area. I look forward one day to getting over your way to take in the beautiful scenery. Thanks also for the links to Cappagh website; very interesting.

    All the best, Alan
