No luck in the Irish Censuses or the Tithe Applotments but you may want to check Griffiths Valuation (free at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/). There are 140 Flynns in Sligo in 1856 including 17 Jameses.

No Flynn households listed in Highwood in Griffiths Valuation 1858, or in the 1901 Irish census:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Kilmactranny/Highwood/
Highwood is in the civil parish of Kilmactranny, and RC parish of Geevagh. Their baptism records start in 1851. As ColCaff has explained, John Flynn is a very common name in Sligo. You need to try and find your ancestor’s parents names if you can, to narrow the search. If he married in England, his father’s name and occupation should be on the marriage certificate.
Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. Highwood falls within the Boyle civil registration area. I checked the births 1864 to 1870 in Boyle. There were 4 John Flynns, plus 1 un-named male Flynn, but none was born in Highwood.

Dear T Flynn
In reply to your queries on a John Joseph Flynn. You are looking for Flynn's of Kilmactranny and so was I. Only problem, your bunch of Flynn's were Highwood people, where as mine are from Carrickard, a "different neck of the woods". Sorry if hopes were raised.

Thank you for your generous help on this. His fathers name is listed as John Flynn Farmer.
The date of marriage in England was March 1886 . So I know he was in England sooner than 1901 based on the info I had.
So I now I am looking for a John Flynn ( whose Father's name was John Flynn) . How many could there be ? : )
Says he was 21 - at time of marriage.
So puts it birth back to 1865.
A bit more to narrow the search.
