John Joseph HILL was bp St Mary's Cathedral Limerick 10 Sep 1826, and migrated before 1848 to Moulmein Burma where he married. Looking for anything about him or his parents in Ireland. So far I've drawn a blank.

Hi Tony,
Have you tried looking at other church records from St. Mary?s to see if you can find more information on the family? Records there begin about 1745 http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showlikerecords&CityCounty=Limerick%20city&parish=Limerick
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. As you can see from the above link, there are copies available at Limerick Genealogy, however a fee applies. Here is their email address:
research@limerickgenealogy.com
You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
I found John Joseph Hill?s birth record at familysearch.org, which list his parents? names as James and Catherine :
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR9D-FR2
Perhaps if James had a trade or occupation he may be listed in Pigot?s Provincial Directory of Ireland for Limerick, http://www.failteromhat.com/pigotm.php
You should check the Limerick City library to see what other records are available for the city. Here is their website:
http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Hi Emma,
Thank you for your reply, and the many sources I had not known about. This is very helpful to one just starting on Irish ancestors. I also had the James and Catherine, but nothing further, so I'm starting by looking for their marriage or for siblings to John. I'm still wondering why John Joseph HILL migrated to Burma, so when I dig further from your suggestions, I'll repost with the details, posing this emigration question again.
kind regards and thanks
Tony
