My ggGrandfather was from Ballinastoe , emigrating to South Australia in 1855, plus his cousin also John Moore, b1831 Ballinastoe emigrating to South Australia around 1849. Although I have been able to find mention of Moore’s in this area right up to 1911 census there doesn’t seem to be any bmd records for this time to connect them all. They were Church of Ireland in Religion. Would they have had a church near there to go to as I have only been able to find mention of a Sunday School and also of a free school. So far the only connection we have been able to find is of the Johns being cousins, plus the second John (1831) is the third son of George Moore. So far there has been a George, Henry, & Connsellor for the tithe records, Henry , George & a William 1851, Griffiths Valuation, Jane 1862, Catherine Moore &her Grandchildren in 1901 census and then on from there. So after all that if anyone can help with the early connections or somewhere else I can look It would be most appreciated. Judy

I'm afraid after a google search I'm none the wiser about which might be your Johns as the list of parishes on roots does not include Ballinastoe or Calary and I don't know which of the above would be closest as I'm not a Wicklow expert.

IF they lived near each other, there us an older & a younger John record from Tullow and Rathdrum.

  • The Church of Ireland Church for the parish of Calary Co. Wicklow is located in Calary Upper Townland - see c1840 OSI Map
The latest RCBL parish liist notes that records for the parish as lost during the events at the Public Records Office during the civil war. Some baptism, marriage and death records from 1831 are available in the RCB Library.

Ballinastoe townland is a very large townland consisting of just over 6,600 acres located to the south west of the parish on the edge of Djouce mountain.

Griffith's primary valuation dated 5th April 1854 so just before your Moore family left shows several Moore properties in Ballinastoe - George, Henry and William. The 1901 census shows the Moore household you mentioned at Ballinastoe townland, widow Catherine Moore a farmer with her son, two grand-children and a servant. No sign of them at Ballinastoe in 1911. Catherine died in 1908 at Ballinastoe from 'general debility' and is noted as widow of a farmer with reported age of 90,  the informant was a Sarah Leeson of Glassmullen daughter of the deceased. There's a probable match for the death of Catherine's husband in 1900, a Henry Moore farmer of Ballinastoe reported age 80 - the informant details seems to be a Jane Doyle daughter, but appear to have been partialy crossed out. There's a promising marriage match for them in the partial extracted civil records on FamilySearch - Henry Moore & Catherine Little on the 14th September 1858, the grooms father is noted as Henry, the extract does not include details of the bride's father or any of the residences, occupations etc. A research cert from the GRO would show these...

Ballinastoe townland appears to be predominantly mountainside land, probably suitable only for grazing of sheep etc., it doesn't appear in the Tithe listings so probably not eligible.
