I am looking for more information about my gtgtgrandparents John MORRISS and Catherine SCULLY.

John was born in 1843 in Annaghdown, Galway and his parents were John MORRISS and Catherine O’DOWD/O’DOUD. John immigrated to New Zealand on the ship Ivanhoe in 1864, married Catherine SCULLY in Lyttelton (Canterbury NZ) in 1874 and died in 1925 in NZ.   Although an alternate source thought they married in Galway.

Catherine SCULLY was born in Galway in 1848, her parents were Owen SCULLY and Sarah MOLLOY. I don’t have any details of her immigration and she died in NZ, 16 December 1916.

They lived in a very small town in South Canterbury NZ called Morven for much of their married life.

I am traveling to Ireland late August 2013 and plan to visit Galway and hopefully find out where any of the family may have lived, schooled or worked.  Thank you for any information you may be able to help with.

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Annaghdown civil parish shows two John Morris records. One in Carrowbeg North townland and the other in Tonagarraun townland. Assuming your John lived past 1856, he is likely one of the two. Not sure if Catherine was from the same parish but there are ten Scullys listed but no Owen.

The only Owen Scully listed in Co. Galway lived in Ower townland, Killursa civil parish.

Enjoy your trip. Let me know if you have further questions.

  • I may have a connection to your Catherine SCULLY.

In New Zealand Mary SCULLY married Daniel GULDAN/GOLDEN/GOULDING in 1875. One of their daughters kept a detailed book with names and dates.

Handwritten in the book is "Mrs John MORRIS, Millburn, first cousin to Mary SCULLY".

Mary SCULLY was the daughter of Farrell SCULLY and Mary CONNOR/O'CONNOR. The family were from Corrandulla in the Parish of Annaghdown Galway. Mary was one of 4 siblings to immigrate to New Zealand. There was Mary, William, Bridget and John. All lived in the Geraldine, Oamaru areas. Possibly there was also a Martin SCULLY who was recorded with his mother Mary CONNOR/O'CONNOR SCULLY in the 1901 census still living in Corrandulla.

I have a print out of SCULLY Baptisms for the Corrundulla Parish.

As well as the Townland Corrandulla, the Townland of Grange is also a possibility for the SCULLY family.

That may mean your Owen SCULLY was a brother of Farrell SCULLY?

Also would I be correct in thinking that Eugene is a variation of Owen?

I have visited Annaghdown Cemetery and located the grave of my great great grandfather Farrell SCULLY.

Have a wonderful, safe, enjoyable trip.

Look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello Michelle,

This may confirm that your Owen SCULLY may have also been known as Eugene SCULLY?

This from the Cyclopedia of NZ entry for John MORRISS.

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Canterbury Provincial District] [Waimate]. Councillor John Morriss, who has represented the Waihaio riding on the Waimate County Council since 1902, was born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1843. In 1864 he arrived in Lyttelton, by the ship "Ivanhoe," and settled in Christchurch. He was attracted to the West Coast goldfields, but returned to Canterbury eighteen months later, and had several years' experience of station life under Mr. C. Dampier-Crossley. Mr. Morriss was farming at Temuka for eight years, and in April, 1881, bought 100 acres in the Waihao district, where he now owns 850 acres of freehold, and 313 acres of leasehold land. Mr. Morriss has served as a member of the Lower Waitaki Irrigation Board for several years, and has been chairman of that body since 1902. He was married at Lyttelton, in 1874, to a daughter of the late Mr. E. Scully, of County Galway, and has had three sons and three daughters. One son has died.

NOTE Catherine is referred to as the daughter of the late Mr E. SCULLY.

  • Hi Jenny

I am the great great granddaughter of Bridget Scully. I am trying to find out more on her parents Farrell Scully and Mary Connor. I see you have been to Farrell's grave - I would LOVE to see a pic if possible. And have you found any more information on his (or Mary's parents)? My email is kmhatka@gmail.com. I live near Temuka, South Canterbury, New Zealand. One day I would love to travel to see the areas my ancestors lived in - a pipe dream in the current climate we live in.

    Much appreciated
