Hello,

These are the marriages we know of:

John Patrick Doyle was married to Ann Monahan (spelling of Monahan has been different in US census records and there are no ship or immigrations records found.

John Patrick was born around 1815

(some ancestry.com members say  he was born in County Wicklow, Ireland)

Those records also say his parents were:

William Doyle and Ann Dowd. I have no supporting documents to verify that info.

John Patrick Doyle married Ann Monahan sometime before 1846 because their first child, Matthew was born in 1846.  Ann was born around 1820.  Her parents and another daughter, Margaret all lived in the USA, but immigration records have not been found to indicate if they all  arrived together with John Doyle, or separate. There are many John Doyle’s in the immigration records but, none of them include the Monohan’s.

The earliest census is an 1850 census record for Howard Township, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA.  And includes Ann Monahon’s parents and a sister.

John Doyle was 31, Ann Doyle was 25, and they had 3 children all born in the US.

Matthew age 4 (born in New York)

Edward age 2 (born in New York)

Mary age 1 (born in New York).

Patrick Monahon was 63

Catharine Monahon was 60

Margaret Monahon was 18 (she would eventually marry John Jennewein).

There was another Monahan couple living in the area too named Owen and Catherine (Simmons) Monahan. Owen  may have been a brother to Ann and Margaret? He was the father to Mary Frances Monahan who married Matthew Doyle (above).

My best guess is that Matthew and Mary Frances were first or second cousins, if the two Monahan families were directly related.

Carroll and Harris families:

Matthew and Mary Frances had several children born in the USA (Minnie, John Henry, Francis O., Clara Ann, Bertha A.)

John Henry Doyle, born in Howard County, Iowa, USA in 1875 married Catherine E. Carroll (born in Iowa in 1876). Her parents were Edward R. Carroll  (born about 1832 in Ireland and Bridget Elizabeth Harris, born about 1840 in Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland (her birth location is based on other people’s trees, so I cannot be sure if this is accurate.

I will stop there and see if my little bit of family details might provide enough to unveil some new details about our Irish Heritage.

I also have a public ancestry.com account and would happily invite you to visit provided you have info that matches my descriptions above.

I look forward to getting a response.

  • John Doyle and Ann Monaghan were my great-grandparents. Their 3rd son, John, is my grandfather, and his youngest son, Louis, is my father. I am trying to find John's parents. They are listed as William Doyle and Ann Dowd, but I know that is not them. My Doyles lived in NY, IIinois and Iowa (not Canada). None of the Doyle-Dowd family was born, lived or died in Canada. Also, Patrick Monaghan and Catherine Johnston did not die in Canada. They died in Illinois and were cared for by their daughter Margaret. I have stories my dad told me and they are not the same Monaghans in Canada, nor are they Dowds as far as I can tell.
