I am looking for an ancestor, John Jourdon (or spelling variants), who was presumedly born in Cork between 1800 and 1810. He was a tanner and a weaver. He left Ireland in the 1840s with his wife Catharine and at least one child, Patrick, for the U.S. or Canada. He lived in Prince Edward County, Ontario until his death in 1882. Any records would be much appreciated.

  • I am now trying to find the birth certificates of John Jurdin (Jordan, Jourdon Gerden) b. circa 1806 and Catherine Burk b. circa 1802 in Ireland (probably Cork). If anyone could find the birth certificates of the family members, John, Patrick, Michael and Ellen, I would much appreciate that, too.

  • Hi Janyjo,

There were no birth certificates in the time period you are researching. Only church records.  If you go to irishgenealogy.ie, you can search Cork baptismal and church marriage records for free.  Hopefully you will get the info you need.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you again, Patricia. How can I find out what ship the family took to emigrate to Canada sometime between 1843 and 1851? If these Jurdins are my ancestors, only Patrick, Catherine and John Sr. survived the trip because they are the only family members listed in the 1851 Census of Canada.
    Thank you.

  • Janjo,

If you have access to Ancestry, you might search the passenger lists.  One caveat: the shipping records at that time did not give much info beyond name, age, country, and occupation.

  • Janyjo,

Public libraries often have subscriptions to Ancestry and you can search for free.

  • Thank you, Patricia. I have one particular concern. How can I be sure that the "Jurdins" you found are actually my ancestors? I know only that John Jordon and Catharine ? are in the Canada Census 1851 along with Patrick, who is listed as 10 years old. I do know that they are my ancestors.

  • The Patrick I located with parents Catherine Burke and John Jordan, born in Cork, was the only Patrick with parents of that name.  If you have doubts, you could always take a DNA test and see if you match other people with Jordans/Burkes from the same area of Cork.

The fact that Patrick was said to be 10 in 1851, when he would have been 8, is not significant.  People at the time were not so aware of ages, birth years, etc.

Thank you again, Patricia. It is very kind of you to respond.

Patrick would have been 17 in 1851, being born in 1834. Would that be significant?

I have managed to find some land records in findmypast. It looks like there was a pub on the property John rented. Would he have operated the pub for the landlord, who appears to be a Mr. Barry Esq.?

I have not found any baptismal records yet. I find it difficult to go through all the microfilm.

I have done a DNA test. There are no Jordons but I will check for Burks!

Yes, that is a bit of a stretch. It would be interesting to see what age he was on the passenger record.

    Hi Patricia,

I have found a marriage record for John Jordan and Catherine Duggan dated 1834.

They could have had a child named Patrick in 1841, making him 10 in 1851. However, I have not found a baptismal record for Patrick born 1840-1842 with parents John and Catherine.

I have tried to find passenger lists on the Library and Archives Canada site but have not found John, Catherine and Patrick.

Would there be any Irish emigration lists online?

I have not had any luck with Irish census records in 1841 and 1851.

Is there another way of finding this family?

    Thank you.
