  • I just came across this posting and suggest the following worth further study, from the 1901 Irish census. As a lot of families use the same first names through the generations, here are some in the area to look at, all are in the Maam area with the exception of Cloughbrack which is 8 miles in the Clonbur direction. 1 Walter joyce 30yrs Teernakill South, DED Curr this is now generally called Tiernakill or Tir na Cille and is in the Maam Valleyu. Here is where the cottage in the film The Quiet Man was,2 Walter Joyce 16 yrs Cloghbrack Upper,DED Cloonbur now usually Cloughbrack Upper Clonbur 3 Walter Joyce 4 yrs Griggins, DED Letterbrichaun also in the Maam Valley. 4 Thomas Walter Joyce 15 yrs Culliagh more DED Letterbrickaun which is between Maam village and Leenane There are decendants of these men still in Maam. There are also a number of Laffey families also in the area. With regard to the townlands Poundcarton is near Maam, Glenglass maybe now called Glenlosg which is a valley off the Maam /Leenane road and Poundcarton is in this area. The area from Clonbur to Leenane through the Maam valley is called Joyce Country and there are many families with this surname.hope this helps
