I have posted this ancestor in Tipperary Chronicles as well as Kilpatrick, which I just recently learned that Judy O'Meara (nee Slattery), born in Kilpatrick, married in 1823 there to Philip O'Meara.  They had a son Darby O'Meara born Dec. 1823, Kilpatrick (I have the doc.).

I would like to know what Catholic church was in Kilpatrick in that time period, the graveyard & if there are transcriptions.  The 90 I checked on one graveyard did not have any Mara's or O'Meara's.  It seems church records only go back to 1834 on the NLI online site.  Philip died C1848 it is believed, but not sure if he or his 2 sons are buried in Kilpatrick.  This couple had two sons who died before 1851.  The one is probably Darby 1823-? and the other son's name is unknown.

Following the death of her husband Philip in C1848, Judy emigrated to Canada with 4 more sons.  The family seemed to have moved around as a baptism was found for Thomas O'Meara (1826) Cashel & Philip (1835) Kilcommon, which leads to wonder what occupation Philip had.

I am still looking for O'Meara Baptisms of sons William (c 1831), John (c 1835) & David (c 1836) as well as dtr. Bridget (c 1825).  Bridget married Michael Ryan from Borrisoleigh & have their document as well as their daughters baptism prior their leaving for Canada.

I am descended from David so would very much like to find him and hope one of your awesome volunteers can help.

Thank you, Marilyn

  • Hi Marilyn,  Kilpatrick was a townland, as well as a civil parish. There was a Protestant Church there in early 1800s.

The graveyard   headstone inscriptions not on line but available, I will look through them for your ancestors.

Kilpatrick in the Catholic Parish of Anacarty,  I have seen the marriage of Philip O,Meara to Judith Slattery there , witnesses

John Ryan and John Dwyer, Also saw baptism for Darby born Dec 1823, found this on www.registersnli.ie free to search.

Catholic Church records for Anacarty on line from 1823, but available from 1805, from Tipperary Family History Research,

email research@tfch.org.  They are closed at the moment due to  Pandemic , they do great work for a small fee.

Have you searched  for them on Griffiths Valuation, www.askabout ireland.ie, or the census.

Its possible relatives of yours still there.

Let me know how you get on.

  • Christina.....I do have Philip & Judy's Marriage in 1823 as well as Darby's Baptism the same year.  I doubt they were married in a Protestant church as she was a devout Catholic (her rosary was always in her lap along with her clay pipe according to a newspaper article interview in 1895).

Her husband Philip died abt. 1846-47.  One article I had said he died 1839.   2 sons also died before she left for Canada.  I believe Darby was one, but no name of the other.  It would be great if you could find any of their deaths.  I realize many couldn't afford gravestones, especially during famine years.

They didn't stay in one place as I found son Thomas baptized in Cashel & son Philip in Kilcommon, therefore Philip would probably not be on Griffiths.  I will look again.

I have yet to find William & David O'Meara's baptisms, having searched NLI parish registers for Cashel & Emly.

Thank you for your reply & time

  • Hi again Marilyn, It was in the Catholic parish of Anacarty  I found the Marriage and Baptism, where did you find them.

If you google  registersnli.ie yourself you will be able to get baptisms for Children born to this couple. after 1823.

I looked up Kilpatrick on Griffiths Valuation www.askaboutireland.ie  Tipperary south riding , Barony Kilnamanagh lower ,

Parish Kilpatrick,  I found two lots owned by  Mara,s leased from a Ryan Man.

I may find headstones , as I feel some descendants came back to Ireland very wealthy, and

put up headstones, this is just my opinion, from some very big headstones I have seen.

A group of people went to Texas  from Anacarty, in 1840, perhaps another group went to Canada same time.

Let me know how you get on.

    Christina.

  • Christina, it was Anacarty I had also found Philip & Judy's marriage as well as Darby's baptism.  I have searched the NLI Baptisms for Anacarty & Donohill from 1823 - 1836 and no other children for Philip & Judy.  Also have covered Kilcommon & Cashel as well as other Townlands around Anacarty.  Have also checked the Tithe Applotments & found Mara's, but no Philip, but think he was not a farmer having moved around with his family.

As far as I know, none of our O'Meara's obtained great wealth or ever returned to Ireland.  If there is a gravestone for Philip, son Darby or other O'Meara/Mara/Meara, it would be grateful for the information.  I have been 5 times for O'Dwyer Clan Rally's, but have never been to Anacarty, Kilpatrick, Kilcommon nor Borrisoleigh (where Bridget married Michael Ryan)

    Thanks, Marilyn

  • Hi again Marilyn, There is a virtual Ryan clan Gathhering taking place in Ireland end of February.

I will try to get you link to it as Bridget married Michael Ryan Borrisoleigh.

Have you searched for Groups in to Canada early 1800s  A lot of work done on The Peter Robinson

Settlers mostly from Co Cork, but a few from Tipperary, 1823 and 1825, also the Talbot settlers from

    North Tipp.

There were five Slattery,s in Griffiths, four in Kilpatrick, and one in Townland of Graffan, very near Kilpatrick,

    but in Civil parish Donohill.

Will try and find more for you,  Have you tested  your DNA,  its amazing for finding relatives.

Let me know how you get on.

    Christina.
