My great grandmother Julia Gough  , was born in Rathmoloyn, Meath about 1839, to parents Thomas Gough and Bridget McDonald (information on her marriage cert) She came to Australia about 1857. I would love to find  information on her background, siblings etc Any info at all would be great.

Can you clarify the religious denomination of the family? The Rathmolyon RC records do not begin until 1878. The Church of Ireland records go back to the late 1700s. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Co. Meath and did not locate a baptismal record for Julia or records for siblings.

The 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Rathmolyon civil parish does show three Gough records including two for a Thomas Gough. Possibly these records relate to Julia's father.  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/meath/rathmolyon.htm

  • Thank you , Roger, for your time and effort. It is very much appreciated. Julia  was  Catholic, so presume rest of family was too.

I notice I got her mother's name wrong. It should be Bridget McDonnell.I have seen the 1853 Griffiths Valuation and think there is a good

chance these are her people. Her fathers  occupation is "farmer" on her marriage cert. I always knew this was a long shot, but I live in hope!

Always hoping that somebody out there may know something.

    Once again, thank you

Very unfortunate about the late starting Rathmolyon RC records. Have you considered a DNA test? You might match possible 3rd cousins who have more info on your family.

  • Hello, Roger

Thank you for your efforts on my behalf I was wondering if you may know of any History or

Family History society that may be able to give some info/insight into Julia or her background?

               Thanks

                                 Margaret.

  • I am surprised at the late start of the records here, nearly all started  by 1832? Most stopped recording in 1880 as State recordss overtook them, then they start again in some cases nearer 1900.

Some parishes were divided or merged over the time and it might be worth looking in the neighbouring parishes? I have come across two parishes where this has happened and it is an extra confusion for all the different authorities and times that areas endured and genealogists suffer! :)
