I'm looking for any Kane families that might have belonged to this parish.  Francis, or Patrick or Henry.  Born in the early 1800. Francis b. abt 1820, Henry b. abt 1806, Henry around the same time.

  • They were RC as far as we know. There is also a Cornelious.  Would you say that it is a good possibility that we have been looking for the wrong last name?  In the US and on Francis Kane marriage record in Loughguile he was Kane, but he couldn't read or write so is it possible that his parents name was Cahan? are they pronounced the same in Ireland?

  • Hi Sheri,

    I couldn't find Cornelius.

    Only Shankill C of I records are on rootsireland.ie/ - no R C.

rootsireland has a search option for surname variants to be included so Cahan, Kane & Kain would have been picked up.

If searching on other sites you will need to try all 3 versions if surname variant search is not available.

Lack of literacy and transcription errors certainly played a part in records being inaccurate but I believe Cahan and Kane are pronounced vey similarly.
