Hi! I have been researching my mother's ancestors in Scotland, and have found several lines on her mother's side which appear to have originated in Ireland. The records I can find for my great-great-grandfather, Michael (Mick) Keenan, indicate that he was born "about 1843" in Ireland, to John Keenan and Betty Rice. His death record, though, lists his parents as Michael Keenan and Elizabeth McClinchy, so I'm not sure which names are correct. I have not found any records that would indicate his parents also emigrated to Scotland.
I have been unable to find any records in Ireland for any combination of the names listed above, and the only piece of information I have from my mother is that her mother always said that the family came from Cork. We're not sure if that's correct, but it's all we have to go on.
Any help finding a link in Ireland would be greaty appreciated--
Alec

Hi Alec,
Thank you for your message.
It may be difficult to find information without a more specific location as most record sources in Ireland relate to specific places.
There are some places where you can do a search for any family members in the hope of finding church records relating to them. If you can find any such records this will give you a parish name which will then open up other avenues of research to you. Here are a few places you could try, if you have not already done so.
www.familysearch.org This is a huge online databse that has been compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. It includes some records of births, baptismas, marriages and deaths. However, the are not complete records.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ There is an ongoing project to upload church records to this site free of charege. So far records from Kerry, Dublin, Carlow and the the Roman Catholic Dioeces of Cork and Ross have been uploaded.
www.rootsireland.ie This is another huge database of Irish Church records-however you have to pay to view these.
Do you know when John married and where? If it was in Ireland after 1864 there will be a record of it in civil registration records which are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. (http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm ) You can search the indexes to these registers here:

Some other websites which you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

Alternatively, you could contact Cork City Ancestral Project for possible assistance or advice-a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:
Cork County Library,
Carrigrohane Road,
Cork.
Phone: +353 (0) 21 4285648 Email: corkancestry@corkcoco.ie
I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post any new inforamtion that you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Best wushes,
